more power!!

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by jay26, Jul 29, 2012.

  1. in my experence you spend a very short amount of time actually at 150+mph on a straight , if your bike is geared to get out of the corner faster and top out near the red line at the 150-160 mark its gunna be more effective. my 749s used to serously run out of puff with standard gearing at 155ish. how many straights in the uk can you reach 170+mph on? maybe if you are a serous racer more power is the answer but im not sure its the right answer for everyone.

  2. But if h gets better drive, on anything but the fastest straights he'll get there before the bigger bikes

Dont know how quick the op is on track, but the ther bonus is a couple of grand to use on trackdays to get even faster

  3. Thanks for all your advice lads, I thought about the gearing but I feel its more power that is needed on the hole, out of corners and down the straits.
Weighing up all the costs of buying a 996 engine or tuning my 748 to the max they both seem expensive. I must admit I think I’m leaning toward fitting a TL engine in it. I know it’s a lot of work but as I think I need another project over the winter anyway if you don’t count the man hours that will go into it it seems to be the most cost effective way of getting big bang for your buck.
And I think it would be interesting to see how it turns out.

  4. you should get around £550 for your motor, plus another £100 for the ecu.

  5. Seriously thinking of doing a TL/748 project myself(sshh keep it to yourself). So Ill watch this thread with interest.

  6. Would this then be a SD1000?

wouldn't it be more stisfying to brake later, carry more corner speed and be earlier on the throttle to outperform the bigger bikes?

second that, very satisfying to go around the outside or some one on a much faster bike

  8. Yes it is more satisfying to brake later, carry more corner speed and be earlier on the throttle to outperform the bigger bikes, but fucking annoying when they come back past you half way down the strait.
Some times when you are on par with the rider in front and he is on a 1000 and you are on an under powered 750 there is no substitute for power.

  9. I paid £3600 for my 996BP and they're going for about £4-5K from what I can see if they don't have much bling on them. Your 748 would fetch £3K? reckon it would be way easier and probably cost about the same to just trade up. Do you have access to a full workshop of specialist tools for an engine change, and the skills?
Done a few track days on my 996, I'm a bit crap (no knee downs yet, not quite good enough to run with the intermediates) and TBH I always think you're gonna be outdragged by the Jap 1000 fours on the straights unless you get ALOT more power, a standard 996 is only 112bhp and a SPS about 124 allegedly.
I did one track day where a guy on an old 750SS was breezing past folks in the advanced group because he knew how to ride it. I think there'd be more satisfaction in that, you're not 'racing' after all.

edit: gearing, yeah, do you even get to top gear at donington? if not, why not change sprockets and lower gearing. I rarely get past fourth. I had a thundercat 600 before and the best mod I ever did was to change the front sprocket from 15 tooth to 14. Effectively gives you 7.5% increase in power, cost about £10.

  10. I completely get you about the trading up to a 996 and probably a more sensible person would do it but I’m keen to have a go at the engine swap. I like the idea of something different and also I would have 120hp from the off with loads of scope for more power.
I have the workshop for the job we will see if I have the knowledge.
I don’t doubt the guy on the 750ss was going around people in the fast group, I’ve seen 250s lapping people in the fast group. track days can be very subjective one day the fast group is fast the next day its full of racers and it very fast.
