Mot Fail If You Have Converted To Led

Discussion in 'Ducati General Discussion' started by Billywiztheelder, Jan 15, 2021.

  1. Think I’d be listening to @cookster on this given he is an actual, real & current MOT tester.

  2. Yet another hoop to make us jump through .

I got an advisory on a car MoT last year ....
" Number plate not sufficiently clear " .... or some such guff , and it annoyed me .

I asked the tester if he was having a laugh , and I said that any normal sighted
    person could read it .

A couple of weeks later , a local supermarket fitted ANPR in their car park ,
and my plate didn't register .....
..... and then the penny dropped -

  3. I’m all for it and hope they enforce it also. Pisses me off the times I’ve been driving the car or the bike and almost blinded by some donkey with poorly set up hid or led conversion. Great for them if they can illuminate the moon with their new lights but pretty crap for everyone else.

If they were tested and the beam pattern/throw was in spec I wouldn’t mind.

  4. Now we need to make it illegal to sit in traffic with your foot on the brake so the driver behind is blinded by brake lights.

  5. Easily solved, ride pre-1980 bikes.

  6. Auto handbrake is the way to go. I turn mine on when I am in a stop go traffic situation, especially as the rear lights are also LED.

  7. Thanks for the technical explanation.

Contributors to this thread can say whatever they like until they are blue in the face. However the regs are very specific.

If you replace an OE non LED bulb with a LED bulb the tester has no option but to fail the headlight, and therefore the machine.

  8. I like it However while historic vehicles are exempt from VED & MoT I think you will find that the onus of ensuring that the the machine is roadworthy falls on you.

Therefore if the bike were to be considered a danger to you or other road users you could still be held liable. It’s not a ticket to do what you like.

  9. Well yes, that falls under the categories of self-preservation and being a responsible adult.

It was intended as a lighthearted comment rather than a declaration of war...

  10. Fuck me that’s me told

  11. Fair enough, classic car LEDs company must have got it wrong.

Im not really bothered tho as the Stag doesn’t require an MOT so I could fit a collapsed star if I wanted to so long as it doesn’t dazzle

  16. Please don’t get me wrong, I wasn’t having a go at you. Just trying to point out something that is obvious to you and I but maybe not considered by all.

  17. Personally i wish there were no LED lights on the road full stop. Blinding bastard things they are. Especially Land Rover / Range Rover , Audi and the likes with their 4 x 4 thingies. Meeting them on the road is akin to having your retina's burnt out.
What was wrong with olden day headlights when no one could see bugger all, so you had to fit a set of Rally Giant or Hella spotlights for full beam only. Those were the days

  18. I think that’s the problem and one people should be mindful of. If the police determine that a driver was dazzled by illegal headlamps then the person with the illegal headlamps may find themselves up on a charge and an insurance company that’s reluctant to pay out

  19. I haven’t read the regs (can’t be arsed) but someone pointed out on another forum for classic cars that it’s a fail if the headlight unit has been modified (different lamp fitted) so, my question. What if the whole unit was changed and an LED unit fitted? This isn’t meant as an argumentative question but my stag left the factory with (awful) sealed beam units (remember those?) but has been fitted with newer halogen units with H4 lamps, so should that be a fail? Obviously they aren’t bright enough to dazzle so maybe that’s why?

I’m all for better lighting from a safety aspect especially on bikes, I don’t want to give anyone the excuse that they pulled out on my because they didn’t see me.

I get the point about insurance that’s why I’ve told them of every modification.

  20. I agree. Whoever used the word bulb in the MOT rules is wrong. As you say, they are lamps.
