If your experiencing bad vibs. check the valves and the injectors are set up correctly. If the injectors are out, this will make the bike vibrate excessively.
Grumpy's right. Guzzis throb rather than vibrate, if it's leaving you with white fingers it's probably just a service issue. Mind you, if someone's changed the bar end weights that might do it. The standard ones on my Le Mans weigh a bloody ton.
Recently serviced and set up by 'baldrick' at cords italiana so I have been told by previous owner, it vibrates between 65 to 80 mph oh yes and the tacho doesn't work ( normal fault?) will get some heavier bar ends (or load the bars with lead) and some thicker grips
BB It shouldn't give you white finger, all the Guzzis I've rode vibrate but its a lower frequency than my 1098, if anything my Ducati is a bigger culprit white finger and a Guzzi should not shake like a brit 360 twin FFS. Do not know about the tacho. How is the rest of the behaviour through the rev range? Trying to diagnose vibes across the interweb is well nigh impossible (well for me it is) John
Ignition timing has to be absolutely spot on with a Guzzi otherwise they will vibrate..........(and so does carb balance if carbs are fitted). ........the cable clutch on the 80s models can cause white finger (or white hand) because they are very heavy to operate; as can the throttle on the Dellorto pumpers.
Al I believe the V11 went hydraulic on the clutch, but I have no idea how heavy they are, you 100% when you say the early bikes controls were heavy, they could use them on World's Strongest Man. Used to give me not so much white finger but the most horrendous cramps. Pretty sure the V11 will be injection in which case the throttle should be very light indeed. I do agree I'd get it to a trusted Guzzi shop/mechanic that knows the bike and get him to give it the once over and check tuning and injection John
Fortunately I had a very strong grip so I didn't suffer from the heaviness of the controls (or not until I got into central London, anyway......stop start, stop start etc). The 80s clutch was almost faultless; never had a cable break and the only real maintenance item was the slave lever at the rear of the gearbox........the pin in mine seized solid and it eventually broke the lugs on the gearbox end casting.........got a new one and changed it in about an hour. Injection is obviously lighter to operate than carbs, but balance is still crucial......... The firing cycle of the Guzzi will exacerbate any maladjustment just like a Ducati and the vibes start.
Hi Al Apologies for off topic, Al you are only the second person I have heard of who managed to get the Guzzi Gbx end case off and back on again without removing the box. The problem is the shafts drop slightly and trying to get the 3 shafts aligned and the case back on is considered a bit of a feat - Kudos to you Al John
Because the swingarm is a doddle to remove (count the number of turns the pivot adjusters take to undo) it was easy to get the case off.............I don't recall having any difficulty getting the new one on though.........IIRC it just went on..........but I suppose there might have been some swearing. The trouble is with that damn pin is that although the lever had a grease nipple, the pin was a tight fit and it was steel in ally, so it corroded solid..............the new one was well covered in copper grease. Cheers for the advice guys, realised that one of the problems was self inflicted (ahem) wearing summer gloves in winter (winter gloves now worn). Went out on it again today in the fog, loving it, not as light or agile as my duke but lots of fun. All I need now is to finish the duke, get a tourer, oh and another green laner, and maybe an 80's 2 stroke, and possibly another 60's bonnie . Although it has been set up last year it is still vibrating at 65 to 80 mph and it needs looking at. I'm used to vibes but this is sending my hands white.
Ta fig appreciate that , it's starting to look more like the injection balancing. Who would you recommend in the East Midlands ?
