998 My New 998 Project

Discussion in '748 / 916 / 996 / 998' started by number9, Oct 9, 2020.

  1. Two questions:
    1. Did these bikes come from the factory with a rear fender/hugger? Mine doesn't have one, and I can't find one in the parts fiche which is a bit of a surprise
    2. Any suggestions on how to get rid of carbon fiber tank protector stickers? I was thinking a hairdryer and some adhesive remover spray..
I also found out that my clutch housing has been milled. I'm waiting on a CF cover so I used an old gold cover from my HyperMotard...

  2. 1. I don’t think they did but threaded holes are pre drilled in the swing arm to add one.

    2. yes, hairdryer and care. Any adhesive left over can be removed with WD40 and a soft cloth.

  3. Thanks Paul! I got a can of this 3M Adhesive Remover and it's excellent. (I suppose it would want to be for $20 a can.) I'll borrow the wife's hairdryer and see if I can get the sticker off..

  4. I need to replace a couple of the light bulbs that backlight they instrument cluster. The temperature gauge bulb is definitely out and I think one is out on the tachometer as well.

What is the easiest way to get access to these? If I remove the nose cone (and maybe some other bits) can I do them in-situ? Or do I need to take the entire instrument cluster off the bike? I have enough bulbs to replace all of them in one fell swoop...

Also thanks to @West Cork Paul for the hairdryer suggestion. I got the sticker off in less than a minute of work!

  5. Nosecone off. Bulbs are reasonably accessible as they are in push fit rubber housings.

Do you have a manual btw?

  9. I think you can still find OEM copies here and there on the bay. Personally, I love nice books. Finding (and using) an original copy is a real pleasure. Printing one of these will have you deforest half of Sherwood Forest.

  10. I'm a big books guy too. There's a copy on US eBay for $320, which is a little steep. I can get one printed and bound locally for $80, albeit in B&W. In color it's close to $300.

I'll send the guy a message. Hopefully it's not like that time I tried to buy a diamond the size of a fist: it turned out to be moissanite.

  11. Good Lord!! $300?! :astonished:

There are still fair amounts of NOS copies to be found, if you know where to look… D96BE0D8-5FD3-4D9C-AC1C-0C1E3D704F21.jpeg

  12. Sorry, not $300. It's actually $319.20... about 260 pounds.

Let know if you can spare a copy from your impressive collection ;)

  13. Not my collection, I wish though. The seller has a 998S handy in English/Chinese. It’s NOS, still under blister. He also sometimes has NOS Ducati binders for sale, the ones they used in the shops.

    He’s asking 25€ for the manual…

Are you interested ? I can get it for you and ship to the US. It would very probably amount to less than 50 bucks. :D Let me know!

  14. Thanks for the offer! I think I'll hold off for now - I'm looking for a 998 (non-S) in English & Italian

  15. Hi G,any chance he would have an848 evo corse one? Cheers Glyn

  16. He is a pro seller and on eBay. Check this link:

    https://www.ebay.fr/sch/i.html?isRefine=true&sid=bastiangmp

I do not know if he speaks English, but don’t hesitate to try. If not, let me know and I will interface, no problem. He sells these workshop manuals usually at a fair price when they are not in French (nobody wants them over here). Just make sure you check the language with him. Also, he seems to have sourced a very important stock of older bikes manuals (up to 749/999). I do not know if he has paper copies of 848 or Panigale series. Do these exist other than online?

For the 998 manual, I have only seen English / Mandarin (Chinese) versions. That’s what I have for the Matrix (I never was able to source a French one…). Are you sure about an English/Italian version?
