Not as shiny as it usually is, and quite a few carbon bits to fit, but every time I open the garage door...
Thats main reason why I broke mine and sold it all in the end. As I was just chucking money at it and would never get much ££ back. Once all sold I got hold of a 1098s rolling chassis, with few other track based bits. I just happened to have my old Franken dude engine that I didnt sell, along with a few other of my own tasty bits. Hey presto, one fully sorted 1098s for the road. Thats all I want now as my Track days are done. And Im not spending big money any more on the latest Red rockets. In fact none of the new breed of superbikes do it for me really.( Maybe the R1M but not at those prices! ) Ive moved house now so dont have my workshop. So Im not interested in building bikes now. BUT, one Franken Duke I would like to have built would have been a 999s with an 1198 lump etc. Wish I still had my old 999 as a starting point...... View attachment 111255
Here is one of my last pics of my 996/1098 before I had fitted Ohlins front end on it. But with 1098 swinger/back end.
Ok ok it’s not a Ducati BUT..... It is a V4. My VFR800 track bike anyone? Ok it’s got a few special bits & I planning some extra front end work. Took it round Oulton last Autum, in Novices, what a laugh
It’s not healthy for me reading this! My head beguin to machine things, my skin beguin to sweat, my eyes balls spin around.... It’s sunday 07:00h at the morning, mmm I think I have to run down to my basement and build something....
A glorious sunny day out here in the Eifel so took the Mongrel for a play, first chance to get her out as the snow has now cleared. Initial impressions are that the Mag wheels have made it a whole lot less effort to change direction. Suspension needs setting up but have been busy doing other stuff but it's pretty close to where I want it. So will do that soon but as it is a little less compression is all it needs. Really stable thru corners and feels so much more stable and planted than it did before, or I've just not ridden a bike for a few months so anything would feel good. Oh and over winter two mates of mine here have gone to work for Milltek who specialise in custom exhaust fabrication. So going to have to make use of that at some point later in the year,
Fab thread, fab rebuilding skills, a fab story, and now the bike is back where it belongs, on the road. Thanks for the thread , incredible skills you have!
Thanks, I'm no engineer but I take inspiration from other peoples builds so if mine inspires others. Great!
So some updates on stuff that has been going on. Had a load of mates out here for a long weekend so a fair few miles being racked up. This in turn has highlighted areas I need to work on. First is handling/setup so got the sag all set up on the front and then moved to the back. Someone tell me why Öhlins decides to use a plastic/nylon adjusted ring on the rear rebound. Stupid thing has stripped its thread so As a temporary thing the preload is now set using the one metal ring. Not a major issue as my mate from Öhlins will pick one up for me. Infact he is turning his 1098 into an endurance race bike and had the same issue. Looking into a hydraulic adjuster as a long term solution. Anyway bike is now setup a lot better so will do some tweeking on the other settings. Now while on the subject of suspension, a mate had an off with his rsv4 and he has damaged the fg016 forks beyond economical repair. Bad news for him but good news for me as I am having them for next to nothing. These will be used as donors for the hybrid Showa/ohlins/motorworks setup that I have planned for the front. I pick the donor forks up next week or so when back in the uk. So I then decided again to try to do something akin to getting wasps to sting me in the eyes. Yes I am still trying to fathom out why my laptop/power commander won't work. Work of the devil this computer stuff. Well I have achieved success of a sort that is totally useless. I can load maps to a later operating system for pcV but still unable to load to the operating system for my pc3. Goodness knows what's going on but I wish I could sort it so I can lean off the fuelling a bit. Anyway I decided to see what the boffins make of it over in the US of A. More digging transpires I may need a map file that ends 'map' not 'djm' as my PC3 is the earlier non- usb type. Yes I could have flogged it and bought a later one but where's the challenge (frustration) in that? Anyway, Dynojet comes back to me with info on how to access all the .map files. Bingo, all of a sudden I can load maps. So connected the PC3 up to the loom and fired it up. Thank goodness for that, it works. So now it's homework time to swat up on the subject of fiddling with the settings for the injection mapping.
In the boot, happy man. They need some work doing on them but nothing that can't be sorted in due course. Cost to aquire £0,00
