999 Mysterious Number Plate Loss....?

Discussion in '749 / 999' started by yellowducmaniac, Apr 19, 2015.

  1. Yeah, point taken...I should have asked a more pertinent question, has anyone had this problem and what did they do to sort it?...like I said the gap between tyre and bottom edge of plate is 12 inches or more,i was astonished that the tyre could still catch it,and the angle of the plate is about as extreme as I can get it ,any further upwards and it will be horizontal to the deck.

  2. What is it with you and rear light clusters ?? Or was it a indicator you lost ?? shoot me down for sounding stupid but do you use a rear padock stand which maybe catching the plate when taking your bike off of it ? Maybe this could be causing it to bend slightly and catch the rear tyre.

  3. Yeah, its getting to the point where I look at the bike whenever I stop to see whats fucking dropped off lately....the back end seems to be the favourite place at the moment ,and yes it was an indicator that vibrated off last time, the time before that it was the light cluster damaged when my OE number plate was ripped off goin over a speed bump..that was also due,i think to the tail tidy..and no I don't use a paddock stand everyday, only when i'm cleaning the back wheel and chain etc...its got a sidestand;)

  4. Not sure if its an issue with all aftermarket tail-tidy on most bikes. Cant remember if you said your Original one got caught at all. Every tail tidy on every bike I have had has rubbed at one point, when I have looked at the reverse of the number plate. Luckily never got to the point of it snapping off!

I thought its because although aftermarket mounts at the same point obviously, the number plate sits more into the bike, so even if you angle it more it is still not sitting away enough from the rear tyre. So the question is not height but how far its sits further in/out. Even a few mm makes a massive difference.

    I bought a carbon one...Ducati License Plate Holder Superbike 749 999 Carbon | eBay

There was one which went for £38.00 recently. Had no probs with it. But sounds like your luck has not been in. Its as annoying as that nut you un-screw, place on the floor next to you, go to pick up and its gone, just impossible!

  5. I've lost two plates to Evoluzione tail tidies on my 999.

I've given up and put the original monstrosity back on. No further issues.

  6. Thanks for the input Chris, i'm going to have a look to see if I can modify it so it sits further out from the rear of the bike this weekend, even if it means fabricating my own bracket out of some spare ali sheet I've got sitting in the garage...its starting to piss me off a tad!.

  7. No probs...I have a spare OEM tail tidy if you want it to take any measurements off. I had a spate of mirrors falling off, it happens!

  8. Thanks for the offer, i've still got the OE rear hanger ,i just didn't want to put it back on unless as a last resort, i will take measurements from it and see what I can do.

  9. OK, hope it works out

  10. I've cut down the Evotech one for the standard exhaust and bent it back....

  11. Here's a PIC..

  12. Yours looks a little further towards the rear of the bike than mine....looking at the gap between the two i'm still astonished that the bottom of the plate snagged on the tyre.

There's probably room to move it back a few centimeters.

  13. If you were at Willingham Woods it'll be the wheelieing what done it...

  14. also...your rear ride height adjuster is stock? and not aftermarket as these sit the tail lower.

Also If you've changed your sprockets and didn't record your initial height setting then you need to have Ducati factory ride height tool. With the rear fully extended, measure from the top edge of the tool to the dead center of the axle. This should be 237 mm I think. Lengthen or shorten the linkage rod to get this number.

The rear ride height adjustment sets the distance between the rear axle and the tail piece. The only time you should have to adjust this tie-rod is if you change the final drive ratio sprocket sizes and you have to compensate for a slightly too-long or too-short chain that places the axle outside the correct eccentric hub position??? Alternatively, you can remove or add chain links to obtain this orientation, but who does!

Could be a cause, but Im out of ideas now! Hope you get it sorted.

  15. Yes i was at willy woods ,and no it aint down to the wheelies!....i'm far too old for all that shit....although I do have an opinion on some of the knob-heads standards of riding who were there, but that's for another thread.

Chris ,Thanks for the useful advice,i haven't changed the chain /sprockets in my ownership, but I will be checking the ride height, all this started when I swapped the OE hanger for a tail tidy...should be telling me something me thinks...:(

  17. You still sorting your arse end out :Angelic::Brb:

  18. It's the wheelies that does it.

  19. Fabricated this as a quick fix this morning ,once I finish off the rough edges and get it anodised black at work it shouldn't look too bad.

I know it looks a bit heath-robinson ,but I was getting to the point where desperate measures were required!...:D
