New Bike: Gsxr1000r (the Gixxer Thread)

Discussion in 'Other Bikes' started by Advikaz, Jun 7, 2020.

  1. I have Rosso Corse 2’s on the track bike as “damp” day tyres currently.

  2. have heard good things about those as well.

  3. They are very similar to S22s to me. I only got them as the S22s were out of stock last year.
These have done about 1750 road miles, Ducati day Donny in about 34degrees and Silverstone this month in 9 degrees.

  4. Some randoms and a little update.

I changed the pads from the stock items to some sbs sintered jobs before Donington.

this has sort of helped in a way, the pads have a much better feel and more bite. However it’s fairly misleading really as the potential braking power however good that it ‘might’ be is unusable as the abs still kicks in with very minimal lever. They are more consistent though which is nice.

what this has proved to me though is the problem with the gsxr brakes is 100000% the abs. I’ve got so much lever and braking power left that I can’t use! I might have the abs off soon (probably end up over the bars)

I’ve had to adapt my braking style, essentially braking much earlier and for much longer which isn’t ideal as it cooks the disc. However it sort of works. Not a lot of confidence under braking though which is a shame because braking was always one of the things I was good at.

It’s not fun lunging anyone on the brakes though as the bike genuinely does not feel like it’s going to slow down. I rely a lot on engine braking.

This was on road tyres though, it may well be better on slicks.

I’m also having quick shifter issues again. I’ve not had any extra blips since I changed the rear sets. HOwEVEr .. about once or twice per session I am experiencing delays in power between shits. For example.. full power, clip up a gear and the motor just goes totally flat, then comes back gradually and surges. It’s 100% the Quickshifter aswell. Apparently perfect chain tension helps this, but my chain was adjusted before Donington.

I tend to think that the stock QS is a bit... shit

  5. If it helps Adam I was chatting to Steve Jordan when he set my bike up. He said I should get a GSXR (750 or 1000) and the FIRST thing to do is junk the ABS.

  6. I don’t think gsxr’s have ever been renowned for good brakes mate.

Once my abs is gone, I should have incredible brakes. T drive discs, Brembo calipers, sintered pads, Brembo Costa coffee master cylinder, 660 fluid.

    You’d hope it would stop!

  7. I would be willing (as a favour) to do a straight swap with my 675 which has fab brakes.
    HTH.

  8. Gixer brakes have always been shit. M/c, lines, calipers. The lot need replacing ime. (Older bikes, obvs).

They fade no matter what pads. Even with brembo mc and braided hoses they fade like mad. R1 or brembo calipers do the job

  9. ooh you were so nearly right!! But Hpk discs, srf fluid and z04 pads!! Don’t you dare thank me,the pleasure is mine lol

  10. Sorry I missed discs lol

  11. Z04’s would be a total waste of time in this thing with the abs still in.

It would be like having a 12 inch dick but only being able to use 2

  12. It’s not easy mate.

  17. I bypassed the abs, fitted hel lines, calipers and master cylinder, and ebc gpfax pads. Used it for the first time at cadwell this week. Absolutely night and day. The new set up is very good

  18. Not easy? You have the choice of plug and play modules from Yoshi (although light on dash stays on), FTECU or I2M. I went with I2M (around £120). You can buy direct or through a distributor: https://i2m.it/en/absemul/

Disagree about the OEM QS. I have Bonamici rearsets and have done a fair number (we haven't been in lockdown and weather isn't an issue) of trackdays at the 3 tracks within 300 km's of Perth in Western Australia and bashed the hell out of the thing and it hasn't missed a beat - just my experience. And now that you've sorted the tail tidy - exhaust hanger/blanking plate :D

  19. Did you find that those abs plugs worked then?

Everyone I’ve spoken to so far has said it doesn’t solve the problem as the routing of brake hose is still routed for miles and through the pump?
To blank it is a bit more involved as the hoses are run under the air box on the inside of the frame :(

same thing with the quickshifter weirdly. Maybe you Aussie chaps have a different one ?

  20. The module does it's job fine but I didn't mean you don't fit non-abs lines and remove all the abs related hosing - it's just that while it's a bit time consuming it's really just plumbing so I didn't find it a complicated job.

I doubt we have different QS's over here - have you heard complaints about them from other riders with the same Gen Gix? I can't say that I have.
