No Static/freer Sag On The Rear Of My 1198

Discussion in 'Suspension help' started by 1198stu, Aug 16, 2019.

  1. Sounds like that is the situation the OP reports.
Unusual that there appears to be no movement when the wheel is lifted off the ground. I have not heard of that before (apart from on a Harley chopper or 20ft fixed link drag Bike!).

  2. Your spring is too long...

  3. Linkage seized not allowing the swing arm/ wheel to drop?

  4. Mate not strong enough?:astonished:

  5. Was the previous owner 25 stone?

  6. Have you applied the Dunning-Kruger effect?

  7. ...not forgetting the Dix Hallpike test.

  8. Is the swingarm resting on the egg sauce?

  9. @1198stu if you’re still here and reading this what everyone is at a loss to understand is how there can be zero difference in height of the suspension between when the suspension has no weight on it ie you’ve lifted it by the rear frame until the wheel is free of the ground, and when it has the weight if the rear frame pushing down on it. Surely the weight of the rear of the bike should compress the rear suspension, which will then compress further when you sit on it. The suggestion was made of a seized swingarm pivot bolt but you’d have noticed that when riding so assume it’s not that.

  10. If the rear spring is compressed to give the correct rider sag and leaves you with no static sag then your spring rate is wrong.
If youv no static sag your spring is compressed to much.
Talk to kais or k tech etc. The op asked a valid question perhaps he should be welcomed instead of ridiculed.

  12. very first post! ...."I have however been unable to set any free sag on the rear. I have backed the spring preload nuts right off and still no free sag.

  13. If youv unwound the nuts then your swingarm or your shocks fecked.

  14. Andy you said you dont set free sag, to a certain extent you do by setting your rider sag, the free sag then needs to be within what measurements you require or your spring rate is wrong.

Or your shock or swing arms seized.when he says hes backed of the pre load adjusters did he back them off so there is no compression on the spring.
If the spring is still compressed it could be the previous owner was a lard ass and the spring rate is much to much.
I doesnt help that the op isnt answering the requests for info ie existing spring rate.

  15. How does he have 30mm rider sag if he doesn’t have any travel at all...surely it’s zero...still confused by what’s being asked

I wonder what’s being measured: the wheel to seat or the tie rod...

  16. i see free sag as being the swing arm drooped down as far as it goes wheel in the air. This is a constant as it is the extent of the travel. Put the weight of the bike on it wheel on the ground and that compresses the spring an amount which can vary due to different weight of the bike and strength of the spring. Stick the rider on it and it compresses even more based on the weight of the rider.

Exactly! but then he got all pissy!

  17. He knows all that and how to do it all. Its not his first tango.
He just wants to know about the ride height adjuster...

  18. Freddie Krueger more like.

  19. Exactly how I do it. I put axle stands under the pegs to lift the wheel off the ground. Piece of masking tape on the tail with a mark to measure to from the rear axle. Simples.

  20. That’s not what his original question was. Actually he didn’t ask a simple question but stated his situation and asked for “advice”. Then got all shitty when people asked for clarification.

“I have however been unable to set any free sag on the rear. I have backed the spring preload nuts right off and still no free sag. The sag with me on it is set about right at 30 mm. Thought I would ask advice before I tryraising ride height as I don’t want to mess up rake, wheel base etc...”
