1098 Not A Good Day

  1. IIRC 'they' used a different bearing in the early engines ,then switched back.
    My '07 consumed;
    2 x sprags
    1 x starter gear
    1 x piston
    1 x bottom end
The engine now supports a coffee table, which I'm sure will eventual collapse.

  2. Wow...

  3. Crank should be ok. And if it is I'd recommend you have it balanced. Also have the gearbox rebuilt and super finished whilst it's all in bits.
MotoRapido rebuilt my 1098R engine and it's been amazing ever since (over 1000 track miles) Super smooth and pulls like a train.
On the bright side, you can take this opportunity to rebuild your engine to your desired spec. Obviously budget can and often will be a constraint. I don't think I got much change from 4.5k. Eeek....

  4. i agree with the above, good excuse to rebuild and tune, blueprint, balance, sort gear box. Your have one cracking bike then.

  5. Bad luck Ben. That sucks mate. However you've got it at a good place and as Hingey says, every cloud etc. Make it a positive. Good luck.

  6. That was what i was facing ultimately, do i bin it off and cut my losses but then i thought about how much fun i have on the bike and also what would i replace it with - nothing else appealed. For me its the last Ducati superbike i would get so put my hand in my pocket and here we are.....

  7. If the crankpin is scored you can always get it built back up again. Think SEP do that sort of repair

  8. Totally understand I'm in two minds on what do do with it.
    Options I have
Sell it on for a loss and forget it ever happened, no idea what to even ask for it if I did that.

    Rebuild

    2nd hand engine

That's why it's getting put at the back of the garage whilst I weigh them up and decide what my next step is.

  9. the joys of ducati ownership.

  10. Horrible place to be, really feel for you. I think we all slightly dread it...

Your choices depends how you feel for the bike I guess, and the prognoses.

1: sell as is, £4k-£4500? depending on model, year, millage.
2: new engine, you don't know if that will go "POP"as well, your millage will be "wrong" and a mis-match engine frame number will make it harder to sell therefore worth less.
    3: repair as is.
4: break, may be worth it if you can be arsed but only if an S model and people do seem to get stuck with bits for ages.
5: engine repair and "upgrade", nice big tune job, £££, but if she is a keeper........

If it happens to my SRAD or 996 i'd probably break. My 999 i'd probably go for option 5. Very hard decision.

I don't think i'd take option 2 unless I was putting a big arsed motor into an older bike like 916/999.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

  12. It is an S 2007 with 7k miles and totally immaculate has quite a few tasty bits on it too.
If I did engine swap or rebuild I really don't know if I'd ever get over the feeling it may happen again. It is a bad place to be just have to make a decision at some point.

  13. if it were me id rebuild the motor,

  14. If the crank is OK should be fine, as suggested above super finish the gearbox and have it put together proper;. Ducati John has a rep for doing that very well and at a reasonable price :)

If crank is toast, another motor, cranks are not easy to find although there is a guy on here who had some spares, he contacted me about my makes but he needs an 1198 so no good.

rated cream revenge as funny because 'sell 4-4500 as is' unless its broken properly and sold it won't be worth much at all (I know from experience!!)

  15. +1, fix it.

  16. you think £4k is way off?

  17. There is another option....

  18. Back in 5 I'm off to the petrol station

  19. That was a genuine option when my crank snapped. Luckily another way out presented itself, but I'd actually discussed having it stolen and torched, with the wife (not having it, and the wife stolen and torched) o_O
