No need to go to the US, you can get something similar from Meadspeed Mead Speed - Classic Motor Cycle Accessories Or a lot cheaper, from Ragged Edge... Seats - Ragged Edge Racing
I had the chance to chuck the frame on the 750 engine aswell but perhaps spacers would be needed due to being not as wide a fit as the 900. Its handy to be able to chuck your frame on a range of engines to check fit etc. After abit of a think and abit of a look around a few pics i think it will be fine but concerned how close the top of the engine was to the frame and if the shock would have room for the angle to the swing arm. I will probably go back next weekend to try the shock and swing arm just to be sure. I do still need to get some engine bolts...........
Cheers for that, i havent seen anything that is spot on to the period pics ive seen, i may need to make my own or adapt a similar one.
This weekends purchase.............and it does fit! A 1994 900ss/monster engine. Question: the engine has been drained of oil.........should i keep it this way? might be a couple of months before it fires up and was wondering how best to keep it sorted in the time between.
Latest part, not quite a cafe racer yet. thinking about the carbs next and see if i can get the motor running with some other bits.
I'd be putting some oil in it and turning it over. Was it sold as a runner or are you going to strip it? Question on the engine - are the '94 monster and SS specsthe same? I seem to remember someone mentioning bigger valves in the SS heads? (this may have been a senior moment though!).
sold as a runner, i need to get some carbs and an oil cooler for it. Im going to stick some oil in it and see if it will turn. I dont want to be stripping it down yet - if i can get the bike mocked up and the engine running i will then strip and paint everything nice again. If the engine is happy i might just do a basic check and perhaps something major in winter. My take on the engine was they were the same in the early years of the monster and SS, wont be sure unitl a trip i guess. It fits exact for the width and just clears the frame top by mm and the shock clears by mm aswell.
Regarding the engine mounting bolts............does anyone know what size they are? I have one full engine width bolt at 10mm that goes all the way through, is it the same for the front? The rear one has a thread at the right rear for the bolt to screw into. The front dont have threads on the frame and must be a bolt?
Ive been busy so not much happened, i did get the idea to chuck everything i have out of the boxes and onto the bike plus make a list of the bits missing......some are obvious im not sure i want to cafe racer it now. I fancy rebuilding a faired version now. I had always been scared to cut the sub frame. Still need some carbs and a radiator, the radiator sits on top of the cylinder head instead of hanging of the bottom (m900 engine 94) Want to dry build it all first before spending money on paint.........need to get the engine running.
Got a new shiny garage after the extension, finally got the bikes back from the neighbors and back to longingly looking at the duke and what might be one day! Parts list has disappeared so need to make a new one, would be great to hear the engine this year and the original idea was to make it naked but ive decided to have it fully clothed. Its being slowly built with parts bought which i must admit was the wrong and the expensive way to do it but i am having fun.
Nice that you are unconstrained by original kit. Look at the Ricambi Weise catalogue, you could make a nice half faired, single seat (SL or 916 Style) with a race front panel that you could stick a projector headlight into. I've got spare original rear fender and light cluster, instruments and maybe some loom stuff if you get stuck
