Number Plates And Reflectors

Discussion in 'Lounge' started by RC1, Jul 3, 2021.

  1. In case no-one noticed, the "only for shows" numberplate loophole in the UK has been effectively closed off now, and the online manufacturers now ask you for details in the same way that the legal plate manufacturers/suppliers do.

  2. Thanks Chris, I had not heard that.

I don't get what this entire nit picking is all about TBH. The idea that it will now be impossible for terrorists to get fake plates is pie in the sky. If the cops/ government ANPR machines can read the smaller plates (many of us know they can because we have them and have been sent speeding fines by mail) then thats all that really matters.

Some idiot plod or government desk wallah has a hair up their arse about reg plates. Its time they got over it. You'd think they would know there's more important things to focus on...

  3. Although it would seem there is no longer much in it for them, I hope the online plate manufacturers continue in some form, if only to prevent a monopoly situation gather pace as it did before, the very one that had me bucking the system because i refused to pay such a premium for a coloured bit of perspex in the past. I couldn't believe it, but even suppliers of reflective yellow plates with no index letters/numbers on them still insist on the same documents required for a fully finished plate, so it appears the whole process must be heavily "policed" now..

  4. Ordered a plate off eBay last night. Legal size and sent a pic of new keepers slip and driving licence. £8.99 posted.

  5. Soz, but that ain't true for all. X

  6. can you link to a supplier then in that case?..

  7. Search for show plates and there’s load of them on EBay. Sorry but can’t post a link.

  8. i've just looked up "show plates" and around 10 I looked at all ask for legal documents - perfectly willing to accept that i've overlooked some suppliers but none on EBay/UK so far. :upyeah:

EDIT Just found two independent of Ebay, one in Jersey and one in the Republic of Ireland.

and another but didn't disclose location:- https://www.a1showplates.com/bike

  9. I've not long bought a plate from show plates , didn't ask for any bike details at all , just normal payment and delivery .
I always buy from them as I like the quality .

  10. i wonder what makes them 30 quid rather than the 12 or so from other companies?

  11. Only vaguely on-topic ....
.... but does anyone remember the old front number plates for bikes ?

They were mounted in-line on the front mudguard and followed the curve of it .
    I always thought they looked super-cool !

  12. Remember them! Every bike I had as a callow youth had them. Designed to castrate unwary jay walkers, mince cats etc. My number plate was in Roman numerals, solid marble!
First motorcycle mentioned in the bible and you can look it up, was a Triumph. The roar of Mose's Triumph was heard throughout Israel. Must have had a number plate in Aramaic or Hebrew. I beleive the model is still available but with disc brakes and fuel injection. I think I am losing it due to lockdown. Happy days:)

  13. I run a small (9*3) single line number plate, no reflector. I don't ride at night and I doubt that a 10p sized reflector is going to help someone notice me if they can't already hear the exhaust or see the bright red bike...

having just paid £94 for a speed awareness course I can confirm the ANPR on camera vans have no problem at all reading my little plate either...
