Obdstar Users

  1. With the engine management light coming on last weekend on my 1260 Multistrada the OBDStar was invaluable in disgnosing the issue. Minor disabembly confirmed this. It was the manifestation of an issue that I first diagnosed, using the OBDStar, in late 2022. That time it seemed to sort itself out after a reset, the component (rear wheel speed sensor) had, the other day, obviously deteriorated to the point that it could no longer perform it's function satisfactorily. Possibly had been clouted by some thrown up road debris as I reckon was the cause of the previous incident. Error messages this time were persistent and widely affecting/disabling other related functionality of the bikes electronics that relied on the sensor in question for data. The required part, as new but used, has now been sourced and will be delivered next week. Without the OBDStar this would have taken a dealer visit, diagnostics and them probaly ordering the part and fitting it.

Aside from service light resets (oil and Desmo services) the two related incidents above are the only times I've used the device 'in anger'. However, having it in the toolbox is a reassuring asset that's now probably gone a significant way to paying for itself.

  2. Thx mate. Just checked out the bike applicability and it does now indeed include the 2015/2016 1200 ABS, S & T. Fantastic. Happy days. There's so much capability to what it can do as well. Amazing. I know the later Multi's from 2015 onwards don't need to hook up when you change the fuel level sensor but early ones you do (2010-2014 require ECU access to initiate the new sensor I think). Interestingly the unit doesn't appear to have functionality for this just yet for the early models that I could see.

  3. Coverage can be patchy, even on older models. I always recommend checking the current spreadsheet.

I do note that there's now additional functionally for my bike included in the latest update... Thought They'd covered everything, apparently not. Tempted to update.

  4. To be fair mate, there's quite a bit more functionality than I thought there'd be, good value IMO, particularly if you've got more than one bike or your mates want to share in the cost of buying one. Bonzer.

  5. It is pretty painless to do. I emailed and requested the current price. Rob was straight back. I paid via PP and was updated very quickly indeed. I took a years subscription out.

  6. I've been waiting a while for BMDiag to get these back in stock, but I'm still waiting. Can anyone recommend another reliable UK based source to get one from? I can hang on a while longer but I'm going to need one by the end of summer.

  7. Things may have changed but when I got mine I was lead to believe that they were the sole UK importer. Be careful as there are sites on .co.uk domains that are actually Chinese companies. You may struggle for support and getting updates as well as suffer long delivery times as well as import duty etc.

  8. What functionality does the OBDStar have for 2017 monsters?

  9. That's a pretty broad list; 1200, 1200 R, 659, 797 and 821 are all listed as MY17 models in the spreadsheet. Can you please be more specific about which one?

... just noticed that you have 1200s in your sig, there's no 1200s for that year according to the spreadsheet though. In fact the 1200s isn't listed at all... Just the 1200 in E3, E4 and R versions. The E4 and R are available for 2017, the E3 could be a late reg though if you're going by the plate year only.

OBDStar capabilities for the 2017 1200 E4 Monster below.

  10. Cheers bumpkin, it's a '17 1200s strange it's not stated for the S, bit looks a decent list

  11. Not sure what the differences are between the S and non S models in this regard. It would be useful to find someone nearby with an OBDStar that can test compatability for you.

  12. I’m sure the 1200 will cover it as the difference between the S and non S is Ohlins suspension and some other farkles, ecu will be the same.

  13. Sort of what I wanted to say Paul, though didn't really want to encourage @NRS500 to buy an OBDStar and then find out it doesn't work. I did see a response to an enquiry on a vendor website saying it didn't for the S but that was probably a case of "computer says no"... Like you I suspect it would be fine.

  14. The part numbers for ECU on the 1200 and 1200S are identical 28642801A. Therefore if the OBDStar covers the 1200 it will cover the 1200S.
The ecu on the 1200R is different p/no 28642711A, it’s physically the same part but loaded with different maps.
However, @Bumpkin you’re right, @NRS500 really ought to have it verified by BMDiag :upyeah:

  15. Seems like a bargain, so long as the vendor will be able to provide updates into the future, they do seem to have been on eBay since 2014. Also mentions in this listing that this comes without software installed and you'll need to do that bit... Apprently updates for 18 months if ordered before 31st of March. Not sure if there's a catch...

EDIT: Just looked at this again, looks like the seller is in China, states that buyer is responsible for 'Local Customs Taxes'. See tabs at the bottom of the details. Proceed with caution.

BMDiag do offer good support and update renewals into the future. They also include a Ducati Euro5 compatible cable which this vendor doesn't, though to be fair these are less than £15 and only required for the more recent Ducati models.

  16. Mine has arrived today. Despite showing Out Of Stock, I emailed BMDiag and gotr a reply from Robert to say he had more coming in, it was just a little over a week between me ordering and receiving, so if you want one and they're not in stock on the website, don't let that put you off - drop them a line and they will sort you out.

Impressed so far, all I've done on my initial session was to rest the PINs on my M821 and MTS1200GT, and have a scan through some of the other options. I'll be servicing my M821 fairly soon, and the Desmo for the MTS isn't too far away so that's when they'll be used in anger.

Thanks @Bumpkin for showing the way.

  17. Connected mine to the Hyper for the first time today. Bought the OBDStar last year from a forum member and almost forgot I had it! Very pleased to have something that just works straight out of the box, and also pleased that I haven't needed to subscribe for updates as the Hyper's a 2018. Features like turning on & off the fans, exhaust valve, fuel pump, dash lights, etc could be useful along with the obvious Service Light reset...

Oh - @Bumpkin - which Password (is there more than one?) do I use for the 'special' features; the bottom selection on the menus? As I haven't needed to subscribe, and the person I bought it from couldn't remember his passwords:tired_face:, I'm a bit in the dark on this.

  18. Hi I have asked this on another post so sorry if repeated or can someone point me in the right direction

Might a hard ask as just bought one of these units for my 1199S

they do these units for other manufacturers, BMW, triumph etc but to save buying another unit how do you just add different manufacturers

  19. 123 IIRC.
