1200 DVT Oh Crap!

  1. I never forget a thing when I ride, just roll straight out the house and pull the pin...

I used to use a disk lock reminder thing after forgetting twice when newly passed you test. Slow speed pull aways so no damage but now, having had bikes just lifted straight in vans, what's a disc lock going to do. I'll leave it to the tracker when out and about. Once in the garage however, on with the chain and ground anchor.

  2. Glad to say disc turned up today and was fitted during first service.
Big thumbs up to ducati aylesbury today. The disc was £318 and how much for fitting?
Don't worry sir, we didn't charge and included it with the service [emoji106]
    How fairs that?
And the service was bloody cheap compared to some on another thread.

  3. I would have got hammer out :(

  4. I put a bit of rubber pipe (3cm cut from windscreen washer tube) on the ignition key of my bike whenever I put the disk lock on as a reminder as you can't get the key in the ignition without pulling off the rubber pipe which reminds me to take off the disk lock. It hasn't failed me in over 20 years but keyless may require a rethink!

  5. Doesn't the underneath of the calipers or caliper mount get trashed, when riding off with a disc lock on? Only ever managed to split a mudguard by wheeling backwards with the lock fitted on my bikes.

  6. Total sympathy: I've done it twice in my life: Did a smart U-turn, feet up from a standing start on my 748 outside a hip café in Guildford (yes, they do exist) and toppled to the ground with the bike atop me, which fortunately saved the bike from damage. Second time was three weeks after I got my new Multi: pulled away from the bike parking near the Glasgow Apple Store, stopped dead of course and toppled sideways. Unfortunately this was into the rest of the row of parked bikes and, yes, I did get the full domino effect :( Damage to mine was just a scuff to the front corner of a pannier. I hauled everything else back upright (fortunately the last bike didn't topple so it sort of held the others up) - couldn't see any damage but, not having any cards or a pen on me, phoned the plod and reported myself, which surprised them not a little. Left my details but never heard another thing…

  7. Don't know if this is healthy for the brakes, don't see why not, but I've only ever used a disc lock for short periods. I take a velcro strap with me when I use the disc lock, and I strap the brake lever back to the throttle grip, thus applying the front brake. You HAVE to remove the velcro strap to drive off, which, in turn, reminds you to remove the disc lock. Never failed for me....or am I tempting fate saying that...???

  8. there we go! done it yesterday... luckily I started very slowly and after 1mt bang! bike stopped abruptly and almost dropped.. I still don't know where I found the strength to keep the bike up! Now the disk is slightly bended and I feel a funny noise on very low speed if I touch the brake lever. No problem at normal speed or hard stops. My dealer says that it will unbend itself with a few miles as it's really a small bend... lets see. I felt both an idiot and very very sorry for the bike who has only 4 days..
My previous bike after a week dropped in a parking .. so I guess this is an improvement after all :D

  9. Well I'm in the Pyrenees at the moment with mine.
Big yellow cord for when I use the disc lock, but mainly not bothering if it's a short stop.
The bottom of the callipers is fine as its a massive casting. The disc bends before that gets damaged, trust me!!

  10. I managed to do the same thing fully laden back in 2010 a few months after I got my multi. However, I ended up slightly worse off as traveling from London to Norway and dropped it in a car park in Sweeden. Managed to snap the footrest off, break the disk, bend the handlebars and the icing on the cake, break my lower leg in 3 places.
spent the next 6 months on crutches and also managed to get a pulmonary embolism thanks to the spiral fracture and the cast. needless to say, I've not used a disk lock since.

hope this makes you feel a little better and you're back on the road soon.

    Hope your fine now fella

  12. Apart from paranoia about disk locks and a bit hesitant when pulling away for the first time when parked I'm fine now thanks. The insurance was a bit of a nightmare but luckily my wife was a compliance manager for the both bike underwriters and the breakdown cover. top tip, don't accept what the person on the end of the phone tells you about your cover and always ask for a claims form. They are often just reading from a script and are not in a position to asses your claim. first they said i would have to find my own hotel from the time i was released from hospital to when I was due to come home as my final destination was 200 miles away in Norway. with a full length cast that was not an option and they ended up flying me back in business (6 seats :) for me and my leg). They then said that they don't repatriate bikes and that it would be taken to a local garage for repair after which i can collect it. I explain that I wouldn't be able to walk for 6 months but that didn't seem to bother them. After a little bit of complying and my wife reminding them what the terms of the policy were they brought the bike back. To be honest, the broken leg was easier to deal with at the time than the bloody insurance.

  13. Bloody insurance companies r pants sometimes. You pay for what you think is peace of mind and end up with your mind in piece's!!
