Ohlins "Mechatronic" SCU

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by ibgarrow, Jul 9, 2013.

  1. Just ordered the SCU upgrade - excited.

  2. LOL, is there anything you HAVEN'T bought?

  3. Actually disappointingly there is. Wireless filler cap. However, not for want of trying. :D

  4. No offence intended Jimbo, but as an admitted "new rider" and with pretty low mileage done on your new bike, I think you may have just wasted your money?

  5. Even my meagre skills are enough not find the front end diving under braking annoying. If it helps with that then great.

  6. I would suspect there is something wrong with your setup (preload/rebound) if it is diving that much - my 2010 S is on absolutely stock settings and doesn't suffer front end dive, especially in Sport?

  7. Suspension is softer in Urban isn't it? I only ride in Urban so perhaps I should adjust it to make it harder?

  8. Therein "maybe" lies the answer. If you are using Urban to dial yourself into the bike/power etc, (someone else may have to confirm this?) but I "think" you can quite simply apply the 100bhp limit across all riding modes?

  9. OR just put the bike in Sport and don't just whack the throttle open?

I understand new riders wanting to tame a bike but if your getting used to the power delivery in its current set up (100bhp wet flannel mode) then when you change the settings you'll still have to relearn throttle control anyway, that in itself could still catch you out surely.

I vote for put it in sport or touring mode and gently wind on the throttle.......Then just give it the beans :)

  10. I wouldn't advise putting it in Sport for a new rider due to the low speed fuelling. Touring should be fine however and as said the BHP delivered can be tailored to your requirements.

  11. I fitted the SCU as soon as it was available. I've done my last 12k miles with it and it works really well with hard road riding 2-up (the tyres feel extra sticky somehow) and loaded and off road it finds grip where there shouldn't be any plus I have the 100N/mm spring fitted and it makes that work better too. I left rider-only as a fixed set-up and found that DES errors pop-up if I switch to an active mode on the move but everything resets after the bike has been switched off. I fixed the problem when i stopped using the "dumb" setting.

I've ridden the Skyhook bike. This is better.

  14. Sounds like your road is worth a visit! :) The picture was taken in the Pyrennes about 100km west of Pamplona in June this year. We took a detour on our way back from Mugello.

  17. :Yuck:

  18. You will not regret it my good man.

  19. This scu upgrade is this allowing the ohlins suspension to become active in some way , or is it still a fixed compression , rebound and preload that can be changed in the modes but stays constant when changed

  20. The SCU takes over all of the suspension settings and continuously adjusts them as you ride. This is called semi-active or adaptive suspension where the behaviour of the shock absorber/damper is managed in response to changing conditions.

Fully active systems take full control of the position of each wheel in real time which also includes control of the spring, usually by the replacement of the coil spring and hydraulic damper combination with electromagnetic or pneumatic systems.

You could say that the Öhlins system takes active control of the dampers. The springs are still passive.
