V4 Oil Change

Discussion in 'Panigale' started by spooky, Sep 4, 2023.

  1. Thanks for confirming. Nine days on track since the last oil change and it doesn’t seem to have used any.

  2. I don't see why the universal join socket will affect a torque reading ? It's not like you're moving the centre of rotation ? Someone with actual knowledge correct me please...
I do know a crows foot works fine as long as it's 90degrees to the lever arm you are torquing with.

  3. What sort of mileage are you doing on each track day ? I only do multiple day, open pit lane sessions now and on my best 4 day outing, I did 600 miles. It might be overkill but I change my oil at about 1500 miles. Andy

  4. I’ve probably done 1,500km or so on track. There was nearly nothing on the magnetic bolt.

  5. Nor would I expect there to be. Modern oils are a remarkable but everything I read points at track day use giving it a beating. Andy

  6. After a few hours, it seems to be sitting exactly on the lower line, which seems perfect.

  7. I’ve used Motul 300V for this change. The bike is doing very well so far. I’ll probably regret saying that, but maybe it’s due to my very gentle use. :joy: I expect to get nicely below 2:30 on my next visit to Brno. I think 2:20 and below might take a bit more commitment… o_O

  8. Weirdly, it goes on the thread! Certainly not on the crush wahser. Check this though for your bike - I was surprised when I saw the same instructions for my Hyper's Testastretta engine. I used blue Hylomar as I'm old-fashioned ;)

My assumption is that is stopped any oil trickling out until the sump plug's out...

  9. You’re right that’s weird. Does the grey stuff stay liquid like the blue stuff?

  10. That is weird. I put it around the washer but some will definitely have gone on the thread. I find it odd that anything is needed beyond the bolt and crush washer. I ran the engine for 15 minutes and there wasn’t a single drop coming out but I’ll keep an eye on it.

  11. No, the grey stuff is a setting silicone compound...

  12. I checked the level again today and it's maybe 1mm above the minimum, which seems just about perfect.

I've now remembered that I need to top up the coolant - could Ducati have made it just a little bit more of a pain in the backside to do something that should be so simple... There are two bolts in particular that are rather annoying when removing the upper fairing.

  13. And today I finally realised that I can top up the coolant without having to remove the entire upper fairing... What a muppet... :joy:

  14. How do you manage to hold up the bike vertical while on your knees to look in the sight glass? :no_mouth:

  15. Paddock stands… ;)

  16. When I put my bike on stands front and back, my level is different than when I get my brother to hold the bike up with wheels on the ground…

  17. Interesting - I guess it's not 100% level. It's upright, which is the main thing, and it's just above the low marker that I can see, so if that a fraction higher than it should be then it should still be around the minimum and if it's a fraction lower than it should be then it should still be fine.

It's in the van now so I'll have another look when I get it back on the stands and see what difference there is between the height of each wheel.

  18. Talking of oil, I got the (rented) van packed and my girlfriend walked in and said “there’s a puddle of oil under the van”… and there is…:triumph:

So much for heading to the track the evening before the event and getting set up.

The guy who has rented a van to me said it’s steering fluid because he put a whole bottle in and not to worry about it…

  19. Is he Czech? If so your response should be “Ty vole! Okej, je mi to jedno” and just go about your weekend.

  20. Oil level the same after three days on track as it was before, which is reassuring... Such a simple process.
