  2. Mine had burned none at 2500 miles , had a trip to Italy and back and lost half a litre , just over in fact....
And I got the funny oil smell ?
Just ordered some from opie , does anyone know the amount I need , ordered 4 litres but wasn't going to change the filter

  3. Just came back from a trip from Norway down to Barcelona and back, visiting the Pyrenees and Alps on the way.

I have recorded the oil consumption since 2800miles and thinking it is to much, especially when riding on twisty roads.

    Here is my record:
    27.03.16: 2800miles Oil change
    07.05.16: 4400miles 0.4 litres
    19.05.16: 4950miles 0.1 litres
    17.06.16: 6250miles 0.5 litres
    30.06.16: 7250miles 0.4 litres
08.07.16: 7850miles 0.5 litres Mostly riding on gravel roads in this periode
    17.08.16: 8300miles Oil change
28.09.16: 12600miles 3litres total refiled on my trip down to Barcelona. Average consumption is then approx 0.7l pr 1000miles. Going straight on a steady speed in France and Germany, the consumption is not to bad. But when driving in the Alps, Pyrenees or on gravel road it is increasing a lot.

My dealer mostly try to say that everything is normal if there is a problem with the bike or say it's normal wear.

So I am wondering if anyone know what Ducati has to say about this?

I can see several in this thread has oil consumption, anyone had their dealer look into this issue?

  4. 4300 mile trip starting mileage 5100 miles. Oil used 12 Oz's or .354 liter total.

  5. Mine seems to use an excessive amount but only on motorway sometimes, as much as .3 Litre in like 300 miles, but then next to nothing in 400 miles, I have taken it up with dealer, he basically wants t drain it and measure it, refill it and then me ride it, bit of a pain. especially as I know it only drinks on motorway at generally high speed :(

  6. How old and how many miles on the bike? I can't think of many dealerships asking you to measure the oil? .30l in 300 miles is way over average , but has it always been that way? Or has it suddenly arisen?

  7. Mine has spent as 2 millimeters in 6.600km, and is almost the most of the upper line, not much will this in liters or pints, but it does not seem exaggerated, and this coming winter with ice and not much use it's up the review in February, as the COMPLY year before the limit of km.
It does not seem a problem to spend between 0.2 / 0.5 liters 8500km as it is what they will consume and will calculate the km that will take you pass the review. I had triunph who spent this every 1000km and BMW boxer spent even more

  8. That sounds perfectly normal, but makes me think there is something wrong with my bike, since I am using close to 0.5l 1000km.

  9. @Michel coulee my bike is about 15 months old, it has around 13k miles now, oil consumption not really changed, it has always used it, but it seems only to use it on motorway journeys.

  10. I think it is only of concern if normally the bike used very little oil, but then starts to consume a lot more on a regular basis.
Can I ask what oil and viscosity you are using, I thought that the engine gets an easier life on the Mway than urban situations..

  11. Nah sorry disagree with that, did not buy a bike that if I went long distance touring would have to take 3 litres of oil with me. I use oil recommended by Ducati, and same as my dealer puts in.

  12. Agree, it's to much.

Just because it has been like that since new, does not make it right. In this thread there is plenty of bikes that has a normal oil consumption, so there is no reason for other bikes like mine to have a high oil consumtion.

  13. .3l in 300 miles! You sure you've not gone and got yourself a 2 stroke?!?

  14. Could it be that the run in isn't being done aggressively enough. Maybe glazed bores? I know it's a very smooth motor, maybe you lot are taking it too easy.

  15. I should check the oil?!

  17. I can say that I have been through this with ducati UK directly with my bike, so I know what answers will. E offered. For the record ducati UK were simply fantastic to deal with, if you approach them in an accurate and sensible manner. Cannot praise the after sales out of warranty approach highly enough.

  18. My DVT is the 3rd Multi I have had and it uses more oil than the other two but still an acceptable amount. Recent 2000m trip to the Harz Mountains with two days there on quite a bit of high speed autobahns, 5 days in the mountains and two days back again with quite a bit of autobahn. It used 300ml on the way out and the same on the way back with about 200ml used in 5 days of hard usage hooning round the mountains. So more oil used on long high speed roads than on the twisty bits.

Mentioned this to a Ducati Technician and his reply was - "The crankcase breather goes into the airbox and relies on a vacuum in the airbox to suck oil from the breather back into the engine. At constant speed there is no vacuum created by changes in the engine revs and any oil from the breather into the airbox collects and goes out via the overflow. On twisty roads the revs are up and down and any oil from the breather is sucked back into the engine by the vacuum created on the closed throttle" or something like that.

When I got back I cleaned the bike thoroughly and the inside of the Sump Guard ( I have the Touratech Guard) definitely had oil on the inside that must have come from a breather pipe attached to the filter canister. The rest of the engine was dirty but no oil so no leaks.

Is this explanation B****** or does it make sense? Maybe this is the reason for the redesigned 2017 airbox?

  19. It sort of makes sense to me, as I am not convinced the engine is burning it all, point is though maybe for you, but to me nearly 1 litre in 2k miles in unacceptable where ever it goes.
I agree this re calibration (LOL) and redesigned air box may be something to do with the using oil issue, BIG ? is can ours be upgraded????????

  20. Just to clarify it seems that a 400m day on fast autobahns uses quite a bit of oil. In normal riding in the UK (and in the mountains) the oil usage is acceptable - to me. My question is why the high Oil consumption at constant speeds because I don't see that as acceptable.
