oil filter HORROR

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by slumdog, Aug 6, 2012.

  1. Yes it's one of those but off eBay, described as Ducati 916 but the filter isn't genuine so that could have been the prob. Unfortunately, yes the filter is badly deformed now, I tried the screwdriver method which has always worked in the past but it just ripped through it. 3/4 of the circumference is still in one piece so I'm hoping the jubilee clip method may work. If not I'll have to cut the bottom off, remove the insides and borrow or make a tool. Nightmare. It's seriously tight, the bike moves backwards with the force and the filter still won't budge.

  2. Can you tighten/untighten?

  3. No it's too trashed now :-( there's not much left to get a purchase on. Jubilee time I think

  4. yes i had the same problem with mine when I had one for one make of filter and couldn't understand when it wouldn't fit one of the other Dukes, same size filter but different manufacturers use different number of 'flats'!

  5. I also have the proper genuine Ducati tool and found the same thing occured................which is why I use the K&N filters now.

  6. Ok so moral of the story is that I should have checked the flats before going down the screwdriver route but I didn't realise there were different types.

So today I tried the jubilee clip method, but the filter is too misshapen for it to tighten, it just flirted off as soon as it got remotely tight enough. I tried to reshape what was left of the filter but it didn't make any difference. So I took the bottom of the filter off and removed everything inside. I then tried a pair of long nose pliers and a spanner between the handles. It snapped one of the noses off the plies, and these were good pliers. It really is tight. I've checked the thread and it doesn't seem to be crossed or damaged which is a relief, I've drenched it in release spray inside and out and left it.

I think I need to borrow a tool off a kind forum member. :)

    Cheers

  7. I've got a homemade one you can borrow and fairly local to you.

  8. can you not get a cold chisel in and knock it around?

  9. precision engineering…..:upyeah:

  10. Might be tough with the engine in the frame, access is not great. I had the 'luxury' of removing a tight filter from an engine on the bench and it was still difficult.

I don't know who tightened it but I tried many ways to shift it and ended up making a tool to do it which worked fine.

I shouldn't be needing it again, unless I buy another 'project'...

  11. I would have thought if you had the guts of the filter out already then the base of the filter is maybe 60mm, it wouldn't take much to knock it around gently with a cold chisel. Obviously bearing in mind there's a rubber seal there to take some of the shock and protect the sealing surface. Other option would be a cold chisel down the female thread of the filter where it goes over the male spigot/union. Filters are only tin and the metal is soft as you know! I guess the filters right underneath as on most dukes. If you want a pic of the bearing surface of the 851 for example I have mine in lots of pieces at the moment for bearing change. Bets bet would be to lie the bike over a little onto some big cushions, probably with some delicate body parts removed! That should give enough access

  12. Dukedesmo, really appreciate that. I remember roughly where you live from when I picked the Renthal carrier up a few years ago. Could you PM me your address and a suitable time to come and pick it up?

    Cheers

  13. That's funny you should mention that...........I always lay on my back with a torch / lamp and clean up the inside when the filter is out.....

..............the first time I changed the filter on this 750SS, I used an OEM one and fitted it to a clean housing, in the summer etc etc....It was correctly tightened as far as I was concerned.....

I used the bike during the summer quite a lot; but when it got really cold in the winter, I started the bike up and oil was p*ssing down the side of the filter............

...........investigation showed that although the filter was tight enough, the metal lip of the filter had made contact which I guess was OK in the summer as the seal was 'warm' and making proper contact, but when it got colder the seal 'shrunk' and leaked.

Another reason why I use K&N.....not had a problem with three changes since then.

  14. Finally got it off, Phew. Thanks Tim for lending me the tool.

  15. Yeah there are a lot of reasons why we don't live there ( mother country my ass !) , and it would seem that Murphy's law has been much kinder to us than Sods law has been to you lot, I mean look at the place , mushy peas , warm beer ,fucking freezing AND its full of pomms . No wonder all the pomms over here ( and there are a few ) look so friggin happy .... they couldn't get much further away from the place :smile:

  16. Next time fit a K & N or rip the bottom of the d*mn thing then use the needle nose pliers/long ring spanner trick........
