How I got mine out of GT1000, this shows the filter after I had removed it but thought I would take a pic for future reference. The future has now arrived...
Glad im not the only one who has been in this situation. When I did my first oil change on my 996 I found the filter was proper tight. Ive 4 different oil filter removal tools and must have done millions of oil changes on cars/motorbikes (i service all my friends/families cars as well as mine) and never had a problem before. Luckily the old screwdriver through the side & hammering got it off the 996. However, last night, time for another oil change and so I thought id quickly change the oil before my tea. Be a "5 minute job" I told the missus. Anyhow 2 hours later im left with this... Argh! None of my oil filter tools would shift it, even the proper sized cup. It was a genuine ducati filter. I remember when I originally fitted it, I smeared oil all over the rubber as normal and just hand tightened it as per what I would normally do. But, it leaked oil. Then I realised ducati recommended torquing it up, so torqued it up to the recommended amount. After reading this thread I wish id tried the jubilee clip idea, but now the next job will be to make a tool like those other people have done and see if that shifts it. Sods law though, ive got a nice K&N filter here with the 17mm nut on ready to fit as a a replacement. Wish id gone with one of them originally now rather than genuine Ducati. Wish me luck!
Long nose pliers up into the flow holes will do it , might break plier joint if you dont use an adjustable.., good luck !
as slumdog says (and has been said very early in this thread) you need to rip off all the shrapnel/filter internal tin until you get down to the (thicker) base material of the filter where you will find several tooling holes on a PCD. These are the only thing solid you can now act on, and it's easiest to pick two opposing holes.
Yep, thats the approach I will use. Ive an old pair of needle nose pliers which ive broken & reground before so arnt worried about snapping them. If push comes to shove I can make up a tool like others have done. Its just so annoying though, I was fuming so much last night I nearly gave the bike a good kicking. Was in a right mood when I finally came in the house, much to my wifes delight. Just pleased im not the only one who has suffered this!
virtually without exception we have all done something similar, I used to lose my patience when younger I remember treating a car to a set of expensive spark plugs and then snapping the top off one by overtightening the ferrule on the top - I threw it as far as I could which of course was dangerous. The Hamlet adverts helped me no end and I reverted to humming the tune instead of getting angry.
Im glad im not the only one old enough to remember the Hamlet adverts! Its more annoyance more than anything else. Ive done literally millions of oil changes on cars/bikes/vans over the years and never had such a problem. Still all part of the fun of owning a Ducati!
Got the remains of the oil filter out last night, using the needle nosed pliers approach. First set of cheapie pliers broke, but 2nd set got them out, with the aid of a 4 foot bit of scaffolding pole, man it was mega tight. New filter all fitted. Phew!
Cheers. It was a lot nicer when I first painted it 4 years ago. Got a massive barrel of polyurethane floor paint from tool station really cheap and painted it all when I first moved in. Thats the only time the garage has ever been empty. Painted walls in left over magnolia paint and added a load of strip lights. Made whole garage brighter and easier to clean. Unfortunately as always, a blokes garage is never big enough so I end up with hardly any room to work on anything.
