Ok Fight Fans - Best Ever Boxing Punch?

  1. I quite like Tommy. But it would have been funny to see him flattened just to shut his fuken dad up  soz, it’s just the way my mind works…

  2. That was one of those fights, a bit like what Kissinger said about the Iran/Iraq war, where you wished they could both lose.

I also quite like Tommy (who is the absolute spitting image of my dad when he was young) but I just fancied seeing a massive upset out of nothing more than a sense of mischievousness.

  3. Well, that was all a bit shit. The show and the build ups were great, but then the fighters, with perhaps the exception of Logan Paul, badly let themselves down in the two main bouts.

The Fury clan must be privately furious with Tommy only just scraping that victory and looking so ordinary in the process.

  4. I read pretty much the same as you described... but the article also mentioned the event was sold out and there wasn't a seat to be found from 7 PM onwards.

So there's obviously a big attraction to some people..... social media has this effect on some... and so their mates follow not to be left out of the er... excitement. I'm not sure what they are expecting to see.

And I notice they get around the licensing aspects of the fight by having it unlicensed...

  5. Yeah, not Tommy’s finest hour. But it must be hard to crack someone that’s just leaping about like fekin eedjit. KSI thinks he’s Prince Naseem and Sugar Ray rolled into one. Which he clearly isn’t. If you’ve agreed to a boxing match of sorts then box ffs.

Huge interest and razzmatazz to these events but the boxing’s a bit shit  Tommy gets a right a slating from the pros but fuggit, kerrchiiing…. I would if I was a Fury and could half box like him…

  6. It looked awkward, but KSI kept doing the same thing each time, namely bouncing up and down like he was in the mosh pit at a Ramones gig, then throwing a punch before charging in with his head down for the clinch. If Tommy had let KSI run onto a check hook or an uppercut a couple of times, he might have stopped all that nonsense. Easy for me to say from my sofa, but he's supposed to be the pro who is a member of boxing's royal family and, tbh, KSI is more of a natural middleweight, so you would have expected him to impose himself a bit more.

Credit to KSI though - he had a gameplan and though it wasn't very attractive, on a different night and with different judges, it might have been effective enough to get the decision. There's probably a kernel of truth to what he said afterwards, namely that the judges couldn't let Fury (as the pro boxer) lose, but then he knew that going into the fight and so he should have been more positive.

  7. I think it was licensed by the Professional Boxing Association.

The Salt Papi v. (?) fight wasn't bad, but the two main bouts were a real let down.

I'm not sure what to make of it all tbh. On the one hand, it's a circus and "proper" boxers can only dream of the kind of purses on offer to people who already have a lot of money, but on the other, it is inventing a new genre (reality boxing?) and getting a lot of GenZ'ers interested in the sport, which is losing viewing figures to MMA. On balance, I think it is a positive development but if there are many more main events of such poor quality, it might fade away.

  8. I just remembered that I haven't updated re: progress of my son's boxing career.

He was supposed to be fighting last month, but he had to pull out because unfortunately he got badly beaten up by half a dozen bouncers at the beginning of August which left him with a compound fracture of the wrist which needed a metal plate, a fractured nose and fractured orbital bone, along with serious concussion (he was out cold for about half an hour) whiplash and numerous cuts and bruises, including one in the shape of a boot print on his back.

He was coming out of a club in the early hours and he moved a section of plastic temporary fencing out of his way, which triggered a female bouncer who started aggressively giving him grief about it. He gave her a bit of lip in return and she started throwing punches at him, which he slipped while (unwisely as it turns out) laughing at her and saying "you're going to need to get your boys if you want to land a punch on me". At that point, he was hit from behind and the side by at least two male bouncers and then at least 2 others but possibly more, piled in. His legs got swept from under him, he ended up on the floor, was kicked unconscious and then, disgustingly, these fucking animals picked him up and threw him over a fence onto concrete where he landed on his head.

The police got hold of the CCTV and it shows the beginning of the incident, but they dragged him out of camera shot for the main beating. The DC can't say too much but apparently the CCTV corroborates my son's and his friends' accounts, ie: that he wasn't the aggressor and only threw one punch after being sucker punched from behind, and as of a couple of weeks ago, arrests of the door staff for s.18 GBH were imminent.

So, he's out of action for a while (again) after being assaulted (again).

  9. Yep, it wouldn’t have been outrageous if the judges gave it to KSI. Fury couldn’t time him and KSI couldn’t trouble him.

It’s funny, I’ve seen Nigerians scrapping plenty of times and I could draw similarities with KSI. They’re quick and bouncy but a bit slappy too. And fucking mental when they lose composure :astonished:

  10. Fucking hell. Nasty. May need the plate out his wrist once it’s set. My son’s had a similar break while sand boarding.

Hope he mends ok. It’s a jungle out there :astonished: I’m sure it wasn’t as violent in my clubbing days… I’m forever hearing stories about my mates sons getting into violent altercations…

  11. If anything, I think it was more violent in the 80s as there was no such thing as the SIA, security staff were totally unlicensed and not only were there no restrictions on people with criminal convictions doing door work, I suspect most landlords actively sought such people out. I managed to avoid any serious problems from door staff in my younger days, but both my younger brothers who were in their 20s in the noughties got beaten up a few times, at least once pretty seriously, where the younger one lost a couple of teeth and still has a dent in the back of his head from getting a pasting from a group of them.

All respect to your lad and the path he is following , and I'm truly sorry to read about his recent
bad experience , and I wish him a swift recovery .
But at the risk of stating the obvious , there is fighting to a code , and then there is street fighting .
I've seen enough plonkers take a vicious beating ..... simply because they foolishly believed
that their boxing / karate / kung-fu / ju-jitsu training would give them the upper hand .

Well , maybe in a ladies hand-bag swinging contest , but out there in the real world ,
those skills mentioned above are worth next to nothing .
Sheer brutality and savagery will win every time , and the first to get the sickener in
will always walk away the victor ..... you can rely on it !
The same goes double for that special brand of idiot who thinks he can take on four or more men ,
for no other reason than having seen it in the movies .

And if the loser's head or neck happens to hit a kerb stone ?
..... there will be no seconds or medics around to help ,
only an ambulance siren in the far distance .

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news , but that's just the way it is out there .

  13. I'm not sure about that. In my work I have watched dozens, maybe hundreds of street fights on CCTV/phone footage and combat sport training definitely does come in handy, especially MMA. The most memorable example was a lad and his mate who were charged with ABH after his brother phoned him for help while being intimidated by a gang on a tram in Croydon and a fight broke out which the CPS reckoned our guys started. To look at the 3 of them (to quote my closing speech "Two Justin Bieber lookalikes and Harry Potter") you wouldn't think they would say "boo" to a goose, but it turns out they all did MMA and they quite literally kicked seven bells out of the 5 supposedly tough-guy road men who started it all.

In the days before MMA, I had a mate whose older brother was the hardest lad in the area on account of him being really proficient at both jujitsu and kickboxing (basically he was an mixed martial artist before it was an official sport) and my mate learned to scrap from scrapping with his brother. He was also utterly fearless and I was personally witness to him fighting and beating 8 guys at the back of a bus. It helped that the narrowness of the aisle gave him a similar tactical advantage to the Spartans at Thermopylae, but it was impressive nonetheless.

But you are right in saying that it's risky and all it takes is a lucky punch, or to be outnumbered, or to slip and lose your footing, or for someone to have a weapon, for it all to go badly wrong.

  14. Right, fuck it- I’ve just ordered some red oak nunchucks off Amazon. Better give my dentist a heads up. I’ll probably knock me top set out….

  16. But not by the British Boxing Board of Control who I'm thinking are the head honchos of British professional boxing... but there again I'm not sure there is such a thing as British or World head honchos any more.

Some of the younger kiddies I talk to in town and watch such fights, as well as MMA, said they were talking the piss. Evidently you have to subscribe to the channel & on top of that there is a pay per view fee and none of them thought the 'action' was worth it.

But, strangely enough, quite a few of them are members of the local boxing club.

  17. I’m not sure the BBBC are the head honchos. Conor Benn failed a drug test and it seemed they were powerless to ban him outright. It’s a bit murky and I don’t fully understand what’s what… feel free to correct me…

  18. Good Lord!!! 'kin bouncers seem to be a law unto themselves and any excuse... almost a case of if the face doesn't fit. Cnts

Hope your lad is none the worse for it all and is coming along well & there is some legal retribution forthcoming. Unfortunately these are battles that can't be 'won' however distasteful and wrong they are. He should take his charm, personality & good character elsewhere & ghastly people should be ignored & left in their own ghastly environment.

  19. My son somehow watches a load of MMA but neither me or his mother subscribe to expensive TV packages. Hence, I’m not sure how he manages to access it and it might be best I don’t ask too many questions in case Dana White sets his copyright lawyers on me :D

My son enjoys MMA but doesn’t love it in the same way he does boxing. For him, it’s also about the history, the culture and the brutal beauty of the sport, whereas MMA is a bit vulgar and arriviste.

  20. You're deffo correct with respect to murkiness... I believe there is no 'legal' confirmation of who the head honcho is. The BBBC started in the 20s and the PBS in the 90s so the only thing they have is longevity.

It's the same in the world with WBC, WBO, WBA & IBF.

I hear the Rose & Crown have just sanctioned a fight in their car park between Eric 'clumper' Brown & Dave 'nutter' Henry this Friday with tickets going for a fiver :D
