Ok Fight Fans - Best Ever Boxing Punch?

Discussion in 'Lounge' started by Andy Bee, Aug 22, 2022.

  1. A good result for AJ but I expect him to win fights against non boxers. This fight said more about Fury's last result than Joshua's ability/ potential imo.

  2. Yep, Fury very nearly had a Tyson/Douglas moment. Fury was bang out of shape against Ngannou and very nearly paid the price for his complacency.

I don’t like the AJ bandwagon but tbf to AJ himself, his resume is better than Fury’s.

  3. Well it might be if you leave out Ruiz and Usyk

  4. Not seen it but the reports confirm that AJ was in a serious mood to make his mark, and fair play to him.

Let's hope the obvious difference in skill levels between a pro & an amateur puts an end to all this crossover rubbish.

  5. The reports I've read give the impression that Zhang didn't press home his advantage. I don't know if judges still give points for coming forward and taking the fight to the opponent even though they may not be landing punches.

It'll be interesting to hear your thoughts after watching the fight.

  6. With the benefit of hindsight I'm wondering if Fury saw the bout as an exhibition and Ngannou didn't.

  8. Oh good Lord... I forgot about that... I'm not even sure it could be called a crossover... it's real car crash stuff.

Let's hope it doesn't end in a cripplingly sad farce as it did for Holyfield. An old man falling over when trying to throw a punch.... :(

  9. Maybe, but AJ seems busier. Fury’s representatives always seem to screw things up. AJ Fury should be a fading memory now. Maybe we’ll never see it. I hope we do and I hope Fury leathers him. With a live cam on Eddie Hearn’s face :D

  10. Yeah, that’s pretty bad… Power of the greenbacks eh…

  11. I hope the best guy wins -which is probably the same result...

  12. Hey, we can go double or quits on that tenner you’re going to owe me  I bagsy Fury :p

  13. Its important to note that our bet was in regard to whether Biden would run, which he obviously already is; in an uncontested candidate selection process.

However as you appear to be a truth twister in the style of the Conservatives when it comes to fulfilling your word and making good your wager you should note:

The Democratic National Convention will take place in Chicago, Illinois, from August 19-22, 2024. After this date the Dems choice of candidate is 100% fixed and no challenges by other individuals could take place.

  14. While AJ was utterly dominant last night, people shouldn’t get too carried away because he was shockingly poor in 2 of the previous 3 fights and though he looked solid and effective against Wallin, Fury (in shape) and Usyk are in a different league to that guy.

Having said that, Fury looked kind of sheepish after seeing a fighter he struggled against get absolutely destroyed in a round and a half. I suspect that was more regret for not having taken the Ngannou fight seriously rather than fear of Joshua per se (though that right hand he threw would put the fear of God in anyone).

  15. Exactly - just seen the highlights & Ngannou looked ponderous & slow like the amateur he so obviously is but AJ did look a touch less ponderous than he usually is....

Yep it was a monster right... but it was pretty much a free shot against a stunned & static target.

  16. I’d say the Parker result was fair.

Nick Hall deserved better for his efforts.

  17. Nick Ball - spell checker I suspect. Yeah... didn't he floor the other guy twice.. and wasn't there a ludicrous height difference between the two?

  18. About a foot in difference. Sorry for the (spellchecker) typo.

Despite being a close 2nd in the first 6 rounds he came back well and he had 2 10-8 rounds.

    Not a draw IMHO.

  19. Always tough to score tight fights like this and it comes down to how an individual judge subjectively sees each round and the points reflect that 116-119 to Ball, 114-112 to Vargas and 113-113. Plus I've always thought a challenger has to really take the fight to, and beat the Champion, to get the win.

It's a shame the lighter weights don't get the media attention they deserve... because they don't necessarily have the power to end the contest with one punch, as is possible with the clumping heavy weights, you get more of proper boxing match with proper boxing skills on show.

Some of the women's bouts can be like this also... perhaps not always technically superb but plenty of heart on display.

  20. Update on my son:

Unbeknown to me until just now, he fought on Friday evening and won a split decision against what sounds like a pretty tough oppo. Unfortunately, I didn’t have see it because, typically for him, he didn’t tell anyone because he took the fight at very short notice and given what happened to him last year, he wasn’t sure how he would get on.

Seeing as it’s almost exactly a year since he last fight and only 8 months ago he was kicked into unconsciousness by a group of bouncers and was left with his hand flapping around uselessly with a bone sticking out of his wrist, I’m beyond relieved. I was genuinely worried his wrist wouldn’t heal well enough to take the punishment and/or that the trauma of the attack might make him freeze up.

In fact, scratch that, I’m not just relieved, I’m absolutely over the moon because not only did he win his fight, he won the “Best Boxer” (of his club) trophy. :punch:

Edit: apparently someone who is making a documentary about amateur boxing and has been filming at his club and paying particular attention to my boy. He’s expecting some raw footage of the fight to be sent to him midweek so I’ll post it here if he does.
