Ok Fight Fans - Best Ever Boxing Punch?

Discussion in 'Lounge' started by Andy Bee, Aug 22, 2022.

  1. I was just watching LL’s fight against Tommy Morrison the other day. Very classy

Lennox did indeed love his mum. So much so that along with his slightly effeminate and softly spoken manner, it made me wonder whether he would turn out to be the first boxer known to be gay. However, my intuition wasn’t accurate re: that issue as he got married shortly after he retired and as far as I know, they’re still together.

He seems to be a nice guy, or at least that’s how he comes across. I follow him on Instagram and he’s not like most famous people in that he isn’t precious about interacting with his followers so he often responds to comments and gets involved in good natured debates about contemporary fights and fighters.

  2. Just been messaging with an ex workmate, old boy, used to box for the Army & knows his onions.

He doesn't really know which way to go but did say Fury should have fought him a couple of years ago & has left it too late because "Usyk is quick and has beaten a few big fellas". And it all depends which Fury turns up.. interesting he didn't look Usyk in the eye earlier.

Real fascinating bout and I'm off to the Co-op for me cheap bottle of Scottish, have warned the missus I'll be listening to the radio from 11 and I might well be late going up.

  3. Ok, here’s my prediction. Fury gets his hand raised after 12. Unanimous.

We all know Fury blows hot and cold. But not this time I don’t think. He’ll be blowing hot. Usyk laboured a bit with Whyte and Chisora whereas Fury dispatched them both with ease. Fury will maintain the distance (he’s got good feet too) and pepper Usyk. Never say never in heavyweight boxing but I’ll be surprised if Fury loses.

Travel home tonight and Mrs has bought it on PPV. Few lads round tomorrow night. Pizza, lasagna and gallons of ale. Looking forward to it :D:upyeah:

  4. As the well worn saying goes “A good big ‘un will always beat a good little ‘un”

  5. Usually, yes. A big version of yourself will always batter a little version of yourself. Probably :D

  6. Got a feeling it will be a draw.
Either way I won’t be watching it.

  7. That would please a lot of people, not least the suits and the Saudis, who would then get another lucrative unification fight out of it.

  8. Yep... agree it will go the distance but with a split decision to Fury. Suspect they'll be some controversy somewhere, low blow, head butt & cut, points docked for holding etc.

But I'm pretty certain they'll be no 'Just Stop Oil' protest.

I'm not watching it either but will be huddled round the bakelite wireless listening to it through the soft hum of the valves.

  9. I believe there is a contractual obligation for a return bout regardless of the result.

  10. Haha. Yeah. The Jemimahs and Hugos who glue themselves to roads and paintings would find they tend to take a fairly uncompromising approach to that sort of thing in the sandier parts of the world.

  11. I bet it will only be a matter of time before you can get AI to do a live commentary in the voices of Harry Carpenter and Jim Watt, complete with the nostalgic ambience of a tinny 1970s mic and the hiss and crackle of AM radio.

  12. Abso-fekin-lutely…. I’d love to see the soppy twats try it. :D

  13. Sign me up! Although I thought it was Reg Gutteridge with Jim Watt.

Jim Watt's world title fight was one of those ones in my early days that really peaked my interest in boxing. It was held in the Kelvin, Kalvin (??) Hall in Glasgow in front of a raucous baying crowd and the atmosphere was full of cigarette smoke it was a wonder the fighters could see each other let alone breath.

Jim was a tough strong resilient boxer.

  14. Wasn’t it Jim Watt that should have had a boxing glove on his head??

  15. He was a bit before my time, so I only remember him as a pundit.

  16. You mean like Evander Holyfield?

Lennox Lewis posted a pic on Instagram earlier today of him and Holyfield having a chinwag in Saudi ahead of tomorrow’s fight and I advised him to keep his distance just in case there’s an accidental clash of heads. :yum

Lewis still looks more or less the same, albeit that his hair and beard have gone grey, but ‘Vander looks like a wizened old man. I guess all the ‘roids and HGH took their toll on him….

  17. Holyfield. He’s hard listening. Such a boring twat. He could fight mind…

  18. Referring to the fight were there was a clash of heads ? they're still arguing about whether it was accidental or not.

  19. Not just that fight. He had a bit of a reputation for it.
