998 Old Ducati Service Diagnostic Equipment?

Discussion in '748 / 916 / 996 / 998' started by 92GTA, Mar 19, 2024.

  1. Thanks! I've spoken to Michele and his kit is just not up to the condition I'm looking for. It's a jumbled mess of parts including some MY07 DDS stuff which don't belong. I had considered it as a spare but it just doesn't have anything I need.

If anything, I need an Italian manual to complete my Italian kit, and I'd like to find a complete matching English kit.

  3. Alright, here are some observations I've made in attempting to piece together a complete, all-matching kit.

    1) The older handhelds have a different case vs the newer ones. Old ones have small rectangular latches that slide halfway towards the sides. The newer ones have more standard flip-up-type releases. So make sure you are getting the right case for the handheld.

    2) Pressure kit, make sure it has BOTH of the compression fittings and that you aren't being sold 2 of the same. One is an M10 the other is an M12. Also, make sure they have the O-ring! Note that each kit should have several pages of instructions that are specific to it if it says 1 of 1 or 1 of 2. This won't apply to kits that came as 2 of 3.

    3) Many of the main connectors have a tendency to fray at the connector. It starts with the rubber failing, and then the copper insulation frays. This seems to be ubiquitous among the belt tension sensors - and at both ends :(

    4) Technomotor used multiple vendors in manufacturing parts for their Mathesis kits. When you have things side-by-side it's obvious, like certain fittings being longer, hose material and stamping being different, and the colour of plastic fittings caps vary (yellow vs green). I've noticed some use a rubber that hardens whereas others have not, despite being the same age and appearing to have little use or of being faded by the sun, etc. This is especially noticeable with the black/red pair of alligator connectors that come in the pressure kit.

    5) Different amp meters. The older handhelds came with one version while the newer ones came with another.

    6) Belt kit accessory cables. I'm not yet sure of the rhyme or reason for this yet, but there is a variance in one of the cables in the belt kit. I *think* it has to do with if you bought a "kit" or a belt sensor as an "add-on" (see #7 below).

    7) Belt "kits" with the red case, vs a belt sensor with a cable and metal ears. It appears that one could have either bought a belt sensor complete "kit" in the red case that comes with everything and a couple of extras, or you could have bought the belt sensor as just an "add-on" to your Mathesis - in which case you only got the sensor, 1 cable, 2 metal ears w/fastener.

    8) Language. Be aware that even though the handhelds are language agnostic with the card you use determining the display language, the instructions are not multiple languages, and the label on the belt sensor is in each specific language.

    9) DDS compatibility. The later made belt sensor kits have yet different connectors allowing them to be DDS compatible. Make sure you are getting a kit with the correct cables for your application because they otherwise look identical (DDS vs Mathesis).

    10) Be sure to of course use the motorcycles service manual which has a diagram of every part included with each kit type with a page of every part number. Oddly enough, the Mathesis operations manual doesn't include this lol.

    11) Manuals/binders. The later handhelds have a silver colour looking front insert for the Mathesis manual, the older ones look like it's just a white piece of paper like a photocopy. Unfortunately, the later ones seem to have a problem with the ink sticking to the inside of the plastic with age.

    12) There were also lots of extras sold for these, like EGT kits, etc. that are separate bits. Then you have the G430 exhaust gas analyzer than I'm still looking for. Lastly, the mysterious "printer" and cable that the handheld can hook up to.

As of now, I'm still missing a later handheld complete ITA manual and ITA belt sensor that's not frayed just to perfect my matching ITA kit. Plus I'm a LONG way from still putting together an English ING kit, let alone anything perfect.

That's my brain dump for now. Cheers.

PS: If you think you will find a proper "matched" kit where the cases are each labelled as 1 of 3, 2 of 3, and 3 of 3 with all the same language, hardware revision, OEM, and consolidated instructions in the matching language. Just put that out of your mind because it will be a cold day in hell by the time one comes up. 99% of these seem to be 1 of 2 kits or a single 1 of 1 kit that are pieced together.
