Old Monster Or Speed Triple?

  1. Monster think we’ve been though 4 but i’d go streetfighter if you can find one for the money - 848 is still
    Loads of fun and belts every 5 years on the SF

  2. Good points from many! I especially noticed "the Speed Triple was simply a stripped down sports tourer", and I must admit I was shocked after riding my Futura sports tourer after FZ-8, it felt like a bus! And I think the Futura has been compared as agile compared to the XX's and the like. So I feel there might the same thing between monster and triple. So for the moment, the Monster is at the top.

    I looked at the Z1000, but at my price range it would be a Z750. Even that might be fun, but it might be just a little too ... reliable for me, or should I say lack of soul? :)
     
  3. I went to work yesterday, and just before entering the office I hear a deep motorcycle thunder coming. I stay outside to see a Monster passing by, what a sound it makes! (the pipes were obviously changed). Do the 600/750/900 sound the same? So you can have the sound you like just by changing the pipes?...
     
  4. The ‘90s Monsters used the same silencers, so sound pretty similar. The choice of “silencer” has more impact than engine size.
    After the facelift in 2000 the silencers are different, but it’s still the choice of “silencer” that dictates how it sounds.

I had a '96 M900 which I still miss, ignition relay went lazy (like the safety relay on my ST4), it used more stop and tail lamps than it should and blew a clutch seal but nothing that stopped me getting home from Germany - did I say I toured Scotland/Ireland/Netherlands & Germany on it? Easy engine to work on and great noise with a couple of BOS end cans on it. For the money it's got to be the best grin factor... Great for commuting and local hooligan blasting on B roads, I was too big for serious comfortable miles as I got cramp in my legs due to low seat but I'm 6'2" so may not be an issue for you? Can't comment on the Speed Triple but the Monster is a hoot
     
  6. My 97 M900 was good fun and made brilliant use of its 70 odd HP

    But was not that easy to work on.. Had to undo an engine bolt to shift it far enough to loosen/tighten the top cyinder belt adjuster. Had a badly ground exhaust closing cam on the horizontal so it took ages (until I gave up trying to get less than 0.08mm).

    IMHO it is good to have a ramp to do the old 2v engines so you can work on them without getting up of the floor and showering grit everywhere
