Thanks for that but I am not loosing coolant at all so I do not think that the tanks are cracked. As I do not have time to order and install a lower temp switch before I leave, I'm going to have to live with it. Do you see any reason not to switch the motor off and on when I'm caught in traffic ? I would intend to use the kill switch for this, leaving the ignition on all the time so that the alarm doesn't keep on self-arming. Anyone see any problem with this as an approach please ? Thanks, G.
If you turn the engine off and the fans still run that should be OK. If the fans stop when you use the kill switch then the engine will start to heat soak and will get hotter before it starts to cool therefore if you are only stopped for a short while it could do more harm than good. Check first before you use the kill switch in case the circuit to the fans also dies. On the 998 if you don't turn the engine over within 5 seconds it automatically cuts the starter power and you have to switch the ignition off and on again. I am not sure what happens if you just hit the kill switch and leave it dead and then turn it back on again whether it will re-energise the starter circuit and allow you to press the starter button, again best to check first.
If I ride in the summer months it can be touching 45+ degrees and the bike runs at around 95-100+ degrees C. The only things that really get too hot are my legs and knackers - the bike seems fine . Hope your trip went well?
