''A leading employment law firm said that “those dismissed will certainly have claims for unfair dismissal”, although significant complexities are understood to exist because of international maritime law. (copied and pasted from elsewhere) P&O Ferries also reflagged its UK fleet from Dover to Cyprus in 2019, citing “operational and accounting reasons” in the wake of the UK’s decision to leave the European Union''
I’m sure long term they’d take the compensation hit, they’ve probably already factored that into their calculations. This’ll blow over come Summer as Joe Public will use P&O come what may, doesn’t stop individuals taking a stand and using alternative ferry companies, ultimately P&O will do whatever they want sadly.
Russia, Dubai, Tories and Brexit. How on earth could that combination have turned out to be a Bad Thing for the UK and its workers?
If there truly is a link with Russian business then more propaganda needed and maybe more people will vote with their feet. (Yes I know there was only one who claimed to be able to walk on water)
This is why these cheapskates fly flags of convenience it allows them to do what they like with their seafaring staffing.Normally no company could get away with flaunting the redundancy act like this company is doing.
How can they say redundancy (job has to be nonexistent) when they have contractors ready to occupy the now defunct job ?
Sadly, I’m not sure it will be tbh. Look at Ryanair for a comparator - they treat their passengers and staff like dirt and the CEO even brags about doing so, yet they’re still going strong. Price and route are the main, perhaps the only, determining factors for budget travel operators, whereas Ratners failed because nobody wanted to buy their girlfriend or mum jewellery that the retailer had described as “crap”.
To be fair to Ryanair they have ALWAYS treated their staff and customers with contempt, it has been part of their modus operandi since day 1 so needs to be factored into the transaction. P & O's move is a change in their positioning and will bring a new dynamic to their trading relationship with the GB public.
There used to be a ferry operator named Townsend Thoresen. Their brand became terminally toxic after one of their ships sank in 1987. So the firm rapidly refreshed its image by renaming itself to - wait for it - P&O Ferries. Then customers returned. I predict there will soon be a new name, logo, and colour scheme.
I think I’ll stick to the tunnel. As much ballache as the M25/M20 is. Actually I’ll leave earlier and go via Hastings. Splendid.
Tbh, after an initial period where people will express their righteous indignation by using other operators, they'll soon come back when P&O's phoenix operation undercuts their competitors by £1 per return to Calais with a complimentary can of Heineken thrown in.
What, it’s got nothing to do with brexit and employment laws are the same as they were and are in EU still? Can’t be true: brexit is the evil twin of covid….
No but P&O cited it as a reason to move their base from Dover to Cyprus. The Tories are no doubt waiting to trash EU employment law though as they have said they wish to change many of the EU laws. I wonder who these new laws might favour?????
