Painful Coccyx

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by jcmental, Dec 15, 2013.

  1. ...you and the misses are trying it out on the 'coffee table'?...very fruity!

JC..you probably know I have the GT, gel seat no problems, Ive done Cornwall to Kent 4.5 hrs non stop(only for fuel!). Fantastic riding position with no aches although it easy to 'slump' behind the screen whilst tour riding! I tell myself to 'sit up', keep my back straight!
The reason I've bought two multi's is because they fit me so well, so I guess it's down to body size/shape.
Good to hear your enjoying your bike. Ive done 1300m on mine in 8 weeks, all good so far.
    Regards vj

  2. Hi Sorry Pete I did see your post and I thank you for the info, but there is 2 things wrong with your advice that Hit me between the eyes
    a) "but gives you a slightly wobbly feeling during spirited cornering" I know there wont be any people on this forum that know how I ride, but I do like to push into and out of corners and I don't think the wobbly feeling will appeal to me, after all we buy the multi's for it's handling, if I wanted wobbly I'd of bought a BMW.
    and
    b) They look awful, I'm not saying they don't work and I'm guessing they are very comfortable. But Ducati's in my eyes are like the Ferrari of the bike world, a fashion statement in the world of bikers. So for that reason I'd rather have the seat altered of buy an after market seat that suits the bike.

I Know that sounds stuck up but I paid good money for my bike with that price has come a certain amount of styling that I'd like to keep.

But again thanks for the post if I wasn't so fussy I'd probably given one ago if it didn't wobble.

  3. Been following this post with interest and I'm not sure if the problem is more to do with breaking the seat in as much as anything. I went for a comfort seat on my previous Multi and loved it. Then I got the 13 model and sold the comfort seat as I didn't think it would fit the new model( as it happens it would) but I digress. For the first 1000 miles or so I hated it. I got a real dull and incredibly annoying ache at the base of my spine which would hit after a couple of hours riding. Just as I started looking for alternatives as it was ruining the experience and then the ache just disappeared. Now I have the worlds most boniest arse and it aches when I sit in the bath so I'm telling you mate, give it a chance, it's bloody lovely.

  4. I have set a goal of 2k to see if it is the new seat or me, if it hasn't gone away fully by then I'm going to remove the seat cover and bond 2 pieces of high density foam along the top of both sides of the seat and re fit the cover, hopefully it wont be to noticeable when no one is sat on it but it should take a bit of the load off the centre of the seat.
I got in touch with Saddelmen.com and asked if they do a seat for the 2013 -14 model, and they said their going to look at the new multi next June.

  5. I bought a 2103 comfort seat for my 2011 bike and titled the bars forward and it made a huge difference. The 2013 seat allows you to move backwards and forwards and tilting the bars makes you lean that little more forwards which takes enough weight of your coccyx to make a real difference

  6. This is a 2014 model S GT it has the comfort seat as standard and like you say is slightly more roomy. I'm sure its a combination of my weight, my touring pants and the fact it's so new. Like I say I'll give it 2k then if I'm still suffering I'll take action and re stuff the seat adding some extra bits to where my ass actually sits and my be hollow out the centre so my coccyx wont touch.

  7. Nothing wrong with the seat IMO as I found no difference between my 2010 with Comfort seat and the GT I borrowed for 2k miles. As you have already suggested, I think the problem may be your trousers and perhaps you should try another pair as a trial.

Hope you find the solution; Great bike!

  8. Wrong trousers Grommet!!!

  9. Had problems between my shoulder blades on my GT lowed the bars and moved them forward fine now

  10. Try the other halves silk underwear? :upyeah:

  11. She only wears thongs that would just make it worse

  12. Commando it is, then...

Good luck on those chilly mornings:upyeah:

  13. Well I did a 200mile round trip on Sunday (it was meant to be a nice day)
any how to day I'm still finding it hard to sit comfortably in my computer chair on the soafer for any length of time. So I've decided I'm going to strip my seat and alter the cushioning in it.
I'm thinking rather than take foam away I'll add 1/2" of high density foam to it like this
    seat padding.jpg

So essentially it will be like one of these but the groove will be under the seat cover.

It would seam that Diavel riders are having the same problem, when you look at a Deavel seat there a very simaler shape to the Multi's seat.

  14. Give this mob a go. They're likely to do a better job than you can do yourself, and the price isn't horrendous.

  15. Well I took the plunge today,

I've taken a friends advice. I took my seat in to Bootleg Bike Seats - Home
I had a good chat with a guy in there.
I told him when I ride my Brand New "TOURING" Bike for more than a few miles I start getting an ache in my coccyx. He said he's altered a few BMW and an Aprillia seat for the very same reason.

We had a long chat about how the seat is angled and what that may be doing to my posture and also the fact that for a touring seat it had a little over 20mm of foam padding in some places. Not to mention my weight and small derriere [IMG]
He's suggested blending the dip in my seat so I'm sat more on a flat cushion than a curved one so that should stop me feeling like I'm being tilted forward and leaning back into it, and how he can shave off some areas to help take some pressure off my coccyx. He sounded like he knew what he was talking about.

So fingers X he said he will give me a ring next week. He said it will be around £30 which I thought was very reasonable I was expecting more like £75.

I'll let you know if it works as soon as I find out for my self.

O, He also said he will be able to reuse the original cover and that the way he alters them you wont be able to tell unless you have an original seat to compare it to.

I'm all excited now, it's been putting me off going out on her.

  16. What did you do to tilt the bars forward? Do you mean literally loosen the clamp and swivel them down? Tempted to give it a go.

  17. I've just orderd 2 of these M10 x 1.25P Fine Pitch Cap Head Socket Screw Allen Bolt Steel Grade 12.9 | eBay 70mm long so I can try dropping my bar risers, the GT has a 20mm space to lift the bars up even more.
Russ at DMC Moto recommended I try it.
I cant use the original bolts there to long with out the spacers, they go right through the top yoke and hit all the wires / pipes running into the engine bay.

  18. Speedycom Performance Ltd now sell LUIMOTO Gold Gel packs - seat gel inserts ;-)

    luimoto_motorcycle_seat_gel_packs.jpg

....and Speedycom also sell LUIMOTO's rather nice seat covers

  19. Could be that your relaxed position is making you slouch slightly changing the shape of your seating position. I've just put some bar risers on which raise the bars 30mm higher, apparently this straightens the back a tad to take pressure off your backside area. Not yet done a long rideout to see if it improves it but will test the theory next week on some rideouts.
