Painting Gloss First Or Emulsion?

So now we know in which order to apply it......
Whats the best way to apply emulsion on walls in good condition?
Paint pad?
Short or medium pile roller?
Microfibre, lambswool or ?
Never 100% happy with the finish.
Any tips to achieving a proper finish? ( apart from getting a decorator in!)

Like a lot on here I have moved away from gloss. This is my current favourite.

Ceiling , walls , woodwork unless your hanging wallpaper , satinwood is a better finish than gloss .
