Germans are renowned for their local-ness with regions often against govts rules. Same as french. And in many ways admired for it: historical regional identity being more important than anything else. But like devolved govt in U.K. in some ways. A senior RPE (responsible person, electrical) will gross ~£140k per annum including offshore hardship allowance, overtime and the inevitable juicy company man bonuses. Trust me, I know this. RPEs don't make that money in the north sea though, I know that. EDIT: He would have been old enough to legally draw income from his pension so what he was probably meaning was that the pension income topped up with the Tesco income was not much less than his original salary - that would seem to make more sense.
Again that is not the case. There is still a fair bit of cash in hand black market economy going on. Its why Government wants a cashless society.
