  1. The kidda (normal picture supplied) has managed to get his nose scratched open today with the dog Walker, competing for a ball. Which he won, at some cost…

  2. He looks happy enough though! “To the victor, the spoils”, eh?

he is happy enough yeah, tried to out some cream on it and he licked it straight off though.

you wait until his mums home later though mate, He’ll be collapsed out on the floor, pretending it’s crisis, trying to get himself swaddled up and spoilt, it’s disgusting to watch!

  4. What did your Breeder tell you to feed him? IMO..'Green' tripe is one of the best things you can feed a dog, but I'm with you about the smell :confounded: We have 4 that are fed in the kitchen with the 'Butchers' stuff though, and I can assure you our house doesn't stink. 80% protein !!!! :astonished::astonished: For Border Collies (over 1yo) never more than 20% 'Processed' protein (raw is fine). A dietary component that includes grain is essential too. Feed a Collie 80% protein and it would be bouncing off the walls 24/7 o_O

  5. IIRC, the breeder recommended James Wellbeloved, but Iggy wouldn't eat it.

I keep reading wildly differing views re: protein intake, and unsurprisingly kibble manufacturers such as Hills and Purina etc recommend 20% ish, while raw food and dog meat suppliers recommend 80%. Tbh, although dogs are more omnivorous than most predators, I can't see a dog eating much grain if left to its own devices with a range of foods on offer. I've also read articles which claim that grain can be positively harmful to dogs. As with all aspects of nutrition, there's a great deal of conflicting info out there and a lot of it seems to be influenced by whether the author is selling a product or has some sort of cranky belief system.

I presume you mean this brand of wet food rather than actual tripe? I tried it out on a motorhome trip when it was easier to bring cans rather than storing a kilo of cooked mince in a tiny camping fridge and he seemed to like it. Great success! Or so I thought, because now, he won't touch it. And I mean he literally won't touch it, because even if his bowl contains other food he won't eat any of it and would rather go hungry. I now have 16 unwanted cans of the stuff, which is good news for the local dog shelter, which will benefit from them when I get round to dropping them off, but bad news for my bank account and car boot space.

  6. I've been using Millie's Wolfheart for quite a while now, 60% chicken and tripe and 40% Veg, no cereals and fillers.

  7. Cereal isn't a 'Filler'. The VERY strong advice about 'grain free' we've received, hasn't come from anyone that is either selling a product, or has some sort of cranky belief system. Instead, it comes from one of the top canine Cardiologists in the UK. (Sarah Smith of Etwall, Derby). Her quote: .... There's an overwhelming body of evidence linking completely ‘Grain Free’ diets to the condition ‘Dilated Cardiomyopathy’ (DCM. Inflammation of the heart. Often fatal). It's now being increasingly seen in breeds that have not previously had a history of the condition. DCM has been linked to a deficiency in ‘Taurine’ (an Amino acid essential for healthy heart function). Whilst Taurine is readily present in most foods (wet/dry/raw), completely ‘Grain free’ diets lack 'Methionine' (another amino acid) and that absence prevents Taurine being ‘harvested’.

Of course, as with all things, a small number of dogs are allergic to grains, so they need to get their Taurine from another source. In extreme cases, sometimes that means a monthly injection.

I'm not 'preaching' here btw. You do what you like/feel is best (obv :upyeah:). I'm just passing on received advice from an expert, so hopefully it'll help you to make better informed choices. I've had Border Collies since 1971, but am still learning too.

And yes...that's the Tripe tins we give ours (the grain is in the 19% protein kibble that we add it to). In the event we can't get Butchers (very rarely), our 'fall back' is Chappie. Ours also have a raw chicken wing each (incl bones) for their breakfast. They're good for their teeth (through scouring and enzymes), plus it helps with anal gland 'maintenance'. We also add Omega 3 Salmon oil to their meal and a measure of 'Plaque Off' for their oral hygiene.

  8. After 12 years on James Wellbeloved our springer suddenly refused to eat it any more and is now crackers for Butchers tripe.(plus the odd piece of orange and banana)

  9. Arkwrights (not Wainwrights) is good too. Have you tried mixing the tripe with the dry? Obviously watch the quantities, as they’re both ‘complete’ foods. We feed ’Bugess/Country Value Greyhound mix’ btw.

  10. My girlfriend and I collected a rescue on Monday, she's owned a Lurcher previously. As she was away working today I had Ella to stay for the day, such a gorgeous dog. A bit flighty and not quite settled in yet, that'll take a few weeks I feel. Gets on really well with my Lab.

  11. She’s lovely. I have a bit of a soft spot for lurchers, greyhounds and whippets.

  12. So the Yu Move arrived, now starts the fun and games of trying to sneak 4 tablets a day down his neck.
He already clocked me trying to hide it in his breakfast this morning, and abandoned it instantly
I feel mean sticking it down his throat, especially if its going to be twice a day for the forseeable, but its either that or a Dairylea subscription, and then the other two will want some of that action lol.

  14. Iggy can not only tell when there’s a tablet hidden in his food, but he got wise to leaving it in his bowl or spitting it out onto the floor (from where it would be retrieved and re-secreted in his nosh) and so he started sneaking off under the dining room table to get rid of it. Now, the only way I can get him to take his worming tablet is by putting it right at the back of his tongue and holding his snout shut until he swallows. I soften the blow by giving him treats afterwards but it’s only once a month, so I don’t envy you having to do it twice a day. Hopefully, you’ll find a way to outwit him somehow:upyeah:

  15. I bought them the dog version a while ago for exactly that and they turned their nose up at it (don’t blame them tbh as peanut butter is VILE lol)

  16. Prince’s ex-missus Mayte runs a dog shelter and she just posted this on Instagram. It might be worth a try.

  17. My Lab eats them like smarties like the rest of his meds. Other than the huge monthly worming tab that I have to break up and put in his food. Maybe that's just because he's a lab :grinning:

Totally unlike cats where you have to wrap the poor creature in a towel and fight with it, then retrieve the tablet from the floor and try again... :joy:

  18. Hehe yesterday was the day in our house - 4 dogs, the beagle eats it like a sweet, the other 3 had to be hidden but no dramas and finally the cats - 1 not too bad, the other we play rock paper scissors though not sure why as we both end up with cuts off her!

Havent been on for a while, glad Iggy's ok @Zhed46

Hows little kidda's nose doing @Phill748

Lovely lurcher and Lab pic, hope they become good buddies and settles in well
