  1. Re. Dog insurance....... Try LV (Dog & Puppy Pet Insurance | 10% Online Discount | LV=) All 5 of ours have the £10k Lifetime policies with LV. Just took out the one for Nell (8wks old) £20.79/month. Meg (9yo) £28.65/month. Gwen (8yo) £28.52/month. Beth (7yo) £29.98/month. Fly (4yo) £24.37/month. Have made substantial claims for both Gwen & Fly and it's been a painless process getting paid out.

  2. For info ....... Nobivac & Canigen are the same thing and can be interchanged. I was told that Nobivac licensed the formulation/process details to Canigen.

  3. Good thing this site, the experiences of insurance all very useful info for the future, wouldnt of thought of LV

I was chatting with a neighbour and they have a sausage dog and the insurance got soo much they decided to just risk it on the credit card and think that balance comes with all dogs at some point but like some have said doing that on 4/6year old dogs with no known issues is just a scam.

  4. Some light humour to come out of my two weeks under cyber attack. One of the many purchases thee’ve tried to order got delivered just now, may as well put it to good use

  6. Why not set up a “doggy” account and then a £40 monthly direct debit from your current account? Cancel the insurance and if money is needed for treatment, you will have it in the “doggy” account. Obviously it’s best to start this when you first get the dog.

  8. Thanks for that JB. Does the premium go up by much after you've made a claim? I've self-funded all of Iggy's vet's bills so far as I wanted to keep the insurance for if he ever needs something really expensive. Thinking about it though, I've probably spent about £1,200 in the past couple of years - £800: serious gastro enteritis, £200: grapegate, £200: GE again - so its probably a false economy.

  9. Premium does go up after a claim, but still cheaper than a lot of the other insurers. If the claim is for something that's not going to recur (e.g. our Fly broke a canine tooth. Claim was about £7k for root canal surgery to save it), just let the policy lapse at the end of term and take out a new one. If you do that though, be sure to declare the previous claim and reason. FE... Fly's renewal was £35/month. A new policy (identical) was just £24/month. Obviously that tooth is now excluded from the new cover, but the repair is done and dusted, and not likely to cause any recurring problems.

Just to be clear...like all policies, there is a sliding age vs % 'excess' scale.

  10. There are two versions of Canigen, 2 and 4. Many breeders are cautious and avoid 4 due to reported issues. The story is vets have purchased 4 in large quantities to get the price down and are now keen to get it shifted.

Our breeder gave the puppy Canigen 2 and advised avoiding 4 at all costs. The also said restarting the vaccinations with 4 would mean the puppy would have 3 vaccinations in total which is a lot for their little bodies. We found a small indie vet in Essex that were great and had canigen 2.

  11. That's just the Leptospirosis jab (the DHP jab is common). Nobivac L2 v L4 is just the same as Canigen L2 v L4. We only use L2 as there have been some adverse reactions to L4 in Border Collies. The difference is the strains of Lepto that each cover. L2 covers all those that are present in UK. L4 also covers other strains that are present in ML Europe (but not in UK). There's a small elevated risk associated with L4 over L2, so why take it? Of course, if you're taking your dog to Europe, then it would be wise to have the L4. It's easy to switch back to L2 later on.

  12. @Jonnybiscuit thx, very useful.

Our local vet (large chain) claimed L4 was needed in London, our breeder (15 yrs exp, fully KC accredited + multi Crufts winner) disputed this. We went with the breeders recommendation of L2.

  14. Well sadly little moo wouldnt leave it, pushed her luck and split the wound so several staples later, she is now grounded in the "shame" hat. Several stages done, but taken a day and think were onto "acceptance" at the moment

  16. Small update on this story.

I was speaking to a (non tory :) ) lady over the field this morning and she suggested to me to get a prescription and buy it online (don’t know why I didn’t think of it tbh as i've done it previously).

Phoned the vets who were dubious of course but after some persuasion they’ve agreed to give me a 12 month prescription that I can administer myself as long as I go in for a consultation first so they can make sure I do it properly.

A fair resolution in my books, although it would have been a lot better if theyd suggested this to me as an option in the first place.

This is what Kennys taking i didnt realise it was quite as ground breaking

  17. Finally managed to order Kenny’s Librela today. It cost me just under £255 for 6 months worth.
At the vets that would have been £95 for the jab and £35 for the consultation

  18. Still trying to convince the missus we should have a dog. My childhood one was an Alsatian, and having seen quite a few recently has made me really fancy another. Big, soft, loving and protecting. Will take some convincing…..
