  1. This is the argument that colonialism and the European empires of the 1500 to 1960 period justify subsequent atrocities. It is a curious paradox of history that in those parts of the world where the colonialists successfully exterminated the autochthones (or reduced them to a negligible rump), the argument is not heard; whereas it is in regions where the colonialists were more restrained and remained a minority that they attract the most opprobrium.

  2. Last weekend Peet van Zyl, Oscar Pistorius's coach, on being asked whether it was too soon to say if Pistorius might compete in the forthcoming World Championships, said that would be jumping the gun.

  9. Come on now. Being serious, I can't understand why, when OP was asked why he didn't shout out as to who was behind the toilet door before shooting, he didn't know. He's completely stumped.
