I have done 47,000km on my 2010 MTS1200. I used to have an AGV that was pretty quiet on the Bultaco Alpina I used to ride. Lighten up guys. My point is that Helmets and screen (and bodies) are very personal and individual. The only clear thing is that what works for one person is actually unlikely to work for another. A cm her or there makes for a very different experience. An experience on a completely different bike is less likely again to be extrapolatable. There was no 'jumping all over" intended. Is unsubscribing any different from a dummy spit?
I sold my ST and placed an order for a Muliti with a Ducati touring screen. I'm told it will be the one that's on the Granturisimo. Does anyone have any experience of this screen? I'm 6ft 2in tall by the way.
Got to say I am now looking in to helmets rather than screens. After Shoei xr 1000 and now xr1100, I am now thinking the helmet is 'part' of the issue. FZ1s. 3 different screens including vario. GSXR stanadard plus double bubble (flat bar conversion) Now multi 2013 with adjustable screen. I still think there is room for much improvement..BUT Im not convinced its all down to the screen! I think its the low cut sides of the Shoei leaving the lower part of the ear exposed, along with lack of lower edge padding in the same area. Before anyone starts jumping up and down, I wear ear plugs and the helmet is a good tight fit. Yes, I am probably a different size, shape, height etc compared to the next rider
I have just tried an Arai and a Suomy helmet on my 13 and I'm still getting the exact same turbulence or as I like to call it. Ear battering.
Interesting. I was getting serious ''ear battering'' on the GSXR, worse at 190kmh...dont ask lol. I'm wondering if its partly down to the style of helmet, as in designed for head down arse up riding position of a sportbike? (the Suzuki had flat bars) What benefit/disadvantage of a less sporty design or peaked helmet...something with no spoiler type parts? Ultimately looking for a quiet time around 70-90mph (autobahns obviously )
Ive owned 2 GSX-R 750s 2007 2009. I have reached to read out speeds of 173mph. Never really had an issue, it was just f'ing fast. The noise is different than on the Multi, like a woodpecker on speed on my head! I have used the same helmets and the same ear plugs. Even now though a week or so later my left ear is shot, high pitched noise all the time. (what seems permanent damage.) I am yet to try the lower screens and GT screen but it was good to try some new ear plugs and helmets. I have 4 in total so will take tem all out and see if there is any difference back to back. Then maybe tae the screen completely off etc etc etc...
If I had all the parts for my old Q3 AGV I would give that a try, seem to remember that was way quieter than the Shoei. Shame the AGV I bought just before the Shoei was such a pile of c... compared to the previous one. I'm thinking custom ear plugs and a different design helmet. The Multi is way better than the gixer was for noise for me btw. And I cant remember the R1 being an issue apart from the helmet being pushed on to my nose at high speed!
Screen spacers worked well for me on my 2010 and stopped the harsh buffeting of the standard screen. interested in comments regarding the shoei helmet as i ride with earplugs but found the arai chaser picks up a lot of noise with the side pods whatever bike i am on, so having had my current lid for 5 years now i might invest in one of these. Out of interest does anyone ride with a Arai Tour helmet on the multi......does the helmet beak get lifted by airflow over the screen?
Had a few KTM 990 adv and now over 2 yrs into an MTS12. Never been able to fathom the screen/noise problem on either bike, though apparently 100s can. Maybe I'm just the wrong height or summit, or maybe it's because of the fact that I am without my bikes over 6m of the year, than I appreciate what I'm missing and just ride the damn things..........
I had the same issues with my tiger 1050 and the multi. In desperation I bought a schuberth lid which was considerably better than my arai. My setup now is a cut down standard screen, spacers and the little wing jobbies, all of which have contributed greatly to reduce noise. I'm convinced that the issue is not just noise going down your lug holes (which can be cured with ear plugs) but transfer of noise through the shell onto your skull caused by turbulent air currents battering the lid. Only answer to that is a barn door or free airstream. That my two penneth for what it's worth
