I'm waiting to see if prices will actually reach double what I paid later this year. Not too far away at the moment, and this is the low season for prices.
I bought a Thruxton because I could not find a Sport Classic at a sensible price. in the next few weeks it will be getting a few mods Intiminators for the forks Hagon Nirto shocks Air filter and air box mod. remap of the ecu Predator exhaust then drop a lot of weight by taking off the rear fender etc. it should see 60lb ft in a very flat torque curve. 70bhp. the wheels do limit the choice of tyre to the stuff like the OEM Metzelers, Avon Road Riders and Pirelli Sport Demon, but the latter two are supposed to be good. at the moment the ride could be best described as entertaining and eventful
And the 916 is renowned and lauded worldwide for its comfortable ergonomics and nice comfy seat isn't it.
I also looked at a Thruxton but personally you need to change the front wheel to 17 inch and rear wider, then it all starts, and gets very expensive. This is the one that gave me inspiration.......drool. http://www.t3-racing.co.uk/thruxton/904SBROCHURE.pdf
Tbh I find it has good grip, it's limited by front brakes and poor rear shocks, and needs to make more noise, I still really like riding it. It's not enough fun though as a permanent bike.
I liked that also, and almost bought one. i first saw it in 2009. Since then only two have been sold. that put me off. beyond that, as the thruxton is over sprung and under damped, when you are pushing on, its a lively and entertaining ride. Hit a bump on a bend and its anyone's guess where you will going next. Which is why I have got some hagon gas shocks for the rear and some inserts for the forks. £500 for those two, will make a big difference. when I have finished the upgrades, I will post up a youtube with how it sounds and looks.
When I bought the SC1000 Sport, new ones where still on dealer floor and being discounted, used values were fair. Now I just can't believe the values. I'm constantly watching the market and laughing....but how long will it last? Are these bikes destined to be "grail" bikes? Will the market keep growing? Bear in mind I asked this same question back 3 years ago when the started getting back to their show room price. if they are "grail" bikes, what parts should we be buying and putting away now for the next generation in 20 years?
Ducati is using up air cooled 796 engines in the Scrambler. Not sure they'll re-introduce the 1100 2 valver in a new Sport Classic. The 1100 air cooled motor was only used in single-sided swingarm bikes such as the Multistrada, Monster & Hypermotard. Using the 1100 & 1100 evo engine in a Sport Classic would need a fair amount of modification. Happy to see them try though......
One thing I've noticed with the 5 or so for sale at the moment is............they haven't sold for 3 months or more, dealers just want stupid money but probably prepared to sit on them, private ones seem to shift quite easily, I think it's really interesting to see where values are going over the next few years.
