Project 749

Discussion in 'Builds & Projects' started by pingping010101, Dec 26, 2013.

  1. I like the look, but I don't think you'll be able to package the exhausts like that in 3d. You will need a link pipe between the headers other wise you'll loose a lot of power.

Have a look at some of the other ducat models for inspiration on the headers.

    I like this style myself

This is similar to what you want but I think the shock might get in the way.

  2. Might not be TD friendly

  3. There has been a slight change of plans... I may not be out here as long as I had originally planned, due to another potential job offer towards the end of the year. This means I'll have to pay a £25k tax bill :(

So the bike will not be so radical, and will retain the standard look.

It will have the frame 749r'd so the frame will be red and the subframe black. The swing arm will also be powder coated black. I saw the picture below and decided the wheels need to be magnesium colour rather than black.

I have bought some tasty Gilles rear sets and I'm going after a full termi system. That means there will be a Termi half system available in march sometime and I'll not be asking the earth for it. No ECU though I'm afraid.
Mark at MADASL has sorted me out a lovely Ducati Performance slipper clutch and I'm now thinking about what more nice things I can put on there. I've picked up a couple of Carbon bits but only an exhaust heat shield and clutch cover. I don't really want to smother it in pointless carbon though so that will probably be the end of the carbon additions.

The ECU will hopefully be remapped by CJS later in the year but I will use the DP ECU rather than buy a new one.

I might be in the market for Magnesium covers and fairing stay from a 749r if any one ends up breaking an R this year.

  4. I have to make a choice. Should I go for a full termi system or a black new shape swing arm? I can't do both. The newer shape full systems are like rocking horse eggs and I can get a 2003 full termi system for a decent price.

The black swing arm makes no difference to handling... I don't know how much a full term system will add.

What do you think I should do?

  5. Full Termi all the way. :upyeah: It's all about the noise.

  6. Got to be Termi's they are getting really rare for older bikes, so grab it while you can. I am sure a swinging arm is going to be easier to get hold of come the time.

  7. So I pushed the button. I now have both a full termi 54mm system and a black swing arm. I will ask mark to see if he can work some magic and if not then I'll keep the grey type swinger.

Here are the parts collected so far...

    DP Slipper Clutch - £350
CF Exhaust shield & Clutch Cover - £35
Black Type Swing Arm - £350
    Gilles rear sets - £237
Stainless steel collector (to make termi half system fit black swing arm...not needed now...maybe) - £120
Brembo RCS 16x18 Master Clutch cylinder - £202
1098 Showa forks and lower triple - £339
CF Chain guard to suit Black Swing arm - £15
    R/H CF Air tube cover - £25
    1098 Loom - £69
    848 Dash - £72
    Full Termi System 54mm - £575

  8. what happened to the tyres in post #37 ??

  9. I have seen a 749 with the GWR end cans side by side under the seat/rear fairing, it looked good, and did not affect the slim line appearance of the bike. If i can find a picture i'll post it up

  10. It's a poor photoshop ;)

  11. Adds up dont it!

  12. It really does.

  13. I'd be trying to keep the black swinger and full system.
It's a ballsy move cutting and modding an expensive exhaust system as it then becomes peculiar to your machine...:upyeah:

  14. I'm hoping that a solution can be found... It's hard to figure out right now, the bike isn't coming until March, I'm not there to compare parts etc. however I have plenty of pictures of my old 749 in various states of undress, it would be useful to find some decent pictures of a full termi system fitted from the wheel end but with the wheel removed.

The 2 types of full system are completely different... The grey swing arm type loops down towards the ground from the header then back up to the end can in a u shape. The black type curls around itself at the bottom, before heading to the can. I think it's going to be a pig and I'll end up keeping the grey arm.

If I can find someone capable of welding Ti then maybe it can be modified.

In regards to the parts becoming bespoke... I've already spent more than I will ever get back for the bike, so it's a keeper.

  15. This is what i mean, you could try this, Not my bike so i should really post the full picture but you get the idea
