Quite Possibly The Biggest Fright Of My Life

Discussion in 'Lounge' started by Bodie, Jan 31, 2018.

  1. @Bodie it sounds like fun. My I ask, Where do you train from? and where was your X Country too?

  2. If I tell you that, you'll be able to find out who I am

I train out of Chiltern Park, my Nav Ex was to Enstone, via Didcot, Abingdon, Farmor Reservoir, Eynsham to Enstone.

I made a minor misjudgement and got a little spooked but ultimately ended up at my destination.

Funnily enough, when I landed at Enstone, I told them I got a little lost and they asked where I was heading. I said here at which point he smiled and said you ain't lost then

  3. @Bodie Ahhhh I see you often from my back garden! and the sun should have been behind you...LOL

Joking apart, it does give you a horrible feeling, when flying, and you suddenly get 'disoriented' ..

I also trained at Enstone and then Chiltern Park.....

  4. Yes it should have been and was behind me but it was a breezy 34mph sw wind and cloudy with sun shining through in places, generally making the vis a bit pants. It was a challenge but I think it was good that it didn't go perfectly (learning from mistakes is a good thing)

I did my 2nd Solo Nav ex the following day and it went brilliantly :upyeah:

  5. Perfect for avoiding danger zones and general navigation when flying a light aircraft.
About as useful as an umbrella on a motorcycle.
As I believe you well know...

  6. Didn't the gent who flew that thing meet his end flying a gyro not to long ago ?

  7. Ken Wallis was the stunt double for Bond, flying the autogiro 'Little Nellie' .. He passed away at 97 in 2013... A real character....RIP

  8. There was a chap that used Autogyros to display at air shows He may have used a Wallis. He met his end when he pulled up from a shallow dive too steeply an it ripped the rotors off. It was quite some time ago but was caught on camera
I watched a program recently where an autogyro was rebuilt and commissioned to fly gain and I am sure in that it said that Wallis wouldn't let anyone have or fly his aircraft anymore

  9. It was old age, Ken Wallis was a pioneer and a legend :upyeah:

  10. All Ken Wallis's Gyros are in storage at Shuttleworth and Little Nellie is actually on display there. On 9th June, there's a Gyro event taking place and they are hoping to see 75 fly in for the weekend.

  11. I'd love to learn to fly, definitely at the top of the list. I was reading in a mag yesterday that the seaplane base in Lake Como near the girlfriends family house is the oldest in the world and one of the busiest for people learning to fly.
