Rear View Camera

Discussion in 'Clothing, Gadgets & Equipment' started by philg25, Sep 15, 2014.

  1. we obviously haven't met.

  2. Could go full tech. Google glasses, webcam BT to phone which then puts the image on the web so the glasses have it as a head up display

  3. There'll be a Google Glass helmet visor soon so that all the vlog people and those obsessed with pointing out minor motoring annoyances on Youtube won't even have to go to the bother of using a GoPro.
    You read it here first.

  4. Not sure of the power requirements, but, guess it's quite low. As such, power the camera from the power feed for the back light. Power the screen from the front side light feed. That way both camera and screen will power up as soon as the bike is running, as the lights are always on when the bike is running.

Saves running wires back to the battery.

  5. I put one on my track bike; it's the only way I get to see my mate ;-)

  6. I think you will find its more likely their usage will be banned whilst driving/riding soon.
Google Glass 'no safer' than phones for texting while driving (Wired UK)

  7. Why would they ban something that is presumably sought out for improved safety - or do they create a smaller blind spot, so if used people would stop looking behind prior to a manoeuvre ?

  8. What a brilliant idea!
I have an Oberon bar end mirror on my offside clip on. This is great because you can either have the stem sticking out of the end horizontally or vertically, which is how I have it. This way it sits over your outer two fingers and makes the bike only a centimetre or so wider. The model I have is very small and neat and only about 35 quid for fantastic quality. It works brilliantly at filling in the blind spot.
HOWEVER, it does mean you are looking a long way off straight ahead, which for me is a big down-side.
Using a rear view camera to check for rozzers is a genius idea but where to fit both screen and camera on a 999?
Love to see more examples of applications and yes, I reckon wiring into the lights is the way to go.

  9. Thinking of doing this on my 1198. Two of my friends have done it on thier bikes and one said he gets interference from the engine though the screen, did you get that @BIG M ?

  10. No I didn't get interference. One problem I did have was vibration shaking the screen, wasn't too bad once you got going but when the bike was idling it used to shake like mad. The screen needs to be bolted ridged to the bike, don't use the mount supplied.

  11. Would you have a link to the one you got? Ebay is a minefield!

  12. Unfortunately I don't. It was about five years ago when I fitted mine. There pretty much all alike, mine was only a cheap one. I think it cost about £30. I went for the 4' screen as opposed to the 7inch. I think the smaller screen fits on the bike better. The 7inch was too big and there isn't really enough room in the headstock area for it. The 4' is quite adequate.

  13. Have got my mount now from @panigale66, camera has turned up (), now just need to remove the top yoke centre nut. Do i need a special tool to do it?

I have modified a waterproof iPhone case to attach to the Bike PenR mount which the screen will sit in. Watch this space!

  14. That video is of the same brand of camera, bollocks video though and defeats the object of putting it in a wing mirror, in my opinion.

  15. Just reading through this when I got my hyper last month it came with a cheapy Chinese rear view camera....it got removed as soon as for multiple reasons....

    1. It was cheap.
    2. The electrical wiring was worse than bell wiring...from the 40's
    3. All the connections were rusty
    4. The quality of the screen was shit...then it broke.

It got trashed for multiple reasons. For some inexplicable reason he didn't use the stock mirrors which are fine...vibrate a little but not too bad...he did have the mirrors and then sold them...shitter as I had to pay 250 quid to get some more...

Id rather pay more for some thing that's quality if it was available but everyone these days seems to want to pay fuck all for everything...saying that id rather just use the mirrors or look behind me...

  16. Have you ridden a 1098 series bike? The mirrors might aswell not be there for seeing behind you. Plus i commute and get stuck going through some width restrictions with the things on.

  17. No but they cant be any worse than my rsv4 - took them off and put an oberon bar end on the right hand clip on...I think just to fight the mirror corner...quality of optics definitely factor in...I have some D-Axis ones on my z1ooo and theyre brilliant...180 quid for the pair (had to get them from the u.s) but you get what you pay for....

  18. Intrigued to see how you get on with this; I love the idea of removing the "ears" on my 1299 and having a camera. Was out for a steady bimble last night (running in before comments come!) and could have sworn there was flashing blue lights in my rear view until an R1 with blueish halogens came past me - the vibrations made it look like blues and twos...

  19. That the thing with the 1198 mirrors. Because they are on extenders they wobble like elephants ears.

2 friend of mine have rear view cameras and both now swear by them (on a Yam and a Kwakker).
