Remember your first crash helmet?

  1. Griffin Clubman for me, actually bought a second one a couple of years later, but got the upgraded model with the chrome effect trim!! Still in the loft I think. That was nearly 30 years ago, bought an AGV a when I got back on bikes, but it was awful when I got the Triumph ( wind noise, buffeting) so now use a Nolan.

  2. 1984?blimey...I must be the oldest on here...I had that full face in 1972,prior to that I'd had a year or so riding without any helmet before I bought my open face! and that wasn't for safety,it was for warmth...

  3. I don't remember the make of mine other than it was black and red! Then had an AGV.

But I do remember a mate with one that you could push both sides together, much amusement.

  4. First lid was an unknown open-face jobbie, but my second lid was a bit special - a Paddy Hopkirk 'Agordo' full-face with a visor guaranteed to scratch the second you touched it. £4.99 from Halfords:upyeah:

  5. My first lid was some crappy open-face hand-me-down from my elder brother - I only ever used it on the road once (when I nicked his bike and went for a spin aged 14 - and fell off!) but sometimes wore it when I was hooning around off-road.

My first 'proper' helmet was a white Bell Star 2 which my Dad bought me from MCA in Leicester when I got my AP50 at age 16

I painted some graphics on it with Humbrol enamel paints - all copied from the Album sleeve of Elton John's 'Yellow Brick Road' - Aces cards and the Dice 'n' Dagger from 'Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting' and 'little Loose Lola' from 'Sweet Painted Lady'

  6. a white shoei 1979

  7. Stadium "Project 7", in yellow (the fastest colour even back in the 70's!).

The old man's Cromwell cork and leather pudding basin job in silver with period goggles is still in the family. It has an ACU stamp that appears to have been applied with a branding iron. I have contemplated a quick blast out with it but never have as it just feels so unsafe it's untrue.

  8. First "decent" helmet was a Kiwi k7 in blue.

  9. its all come back in some horrible 70's dream

first helmet was a plain red Nolan - N37?

  10. i had a red open face with a black 'pop on' peak, i think i was about 7, used to pillion on dads bike to school

used to take evil knieval with me

  11. I used to go to Owens Helmets of Bow. At the factory in Bow, later in Chingford, you could get the proprietor to fit the helmet precisely to the shape of your skull - a bespoke fitting - then line it with soft kid leather. Superb personal service, and still pretty cheap. Then they went out of business, of course.

  12. That's the thing with places that sell things "pretty cheap" isn't it

  13. mine was a crap black AGV with pink and green stripes..boody awful..it would like rattle with the weight of cannonball on my swede at anything about 30...

  14. The 'old man, ducati dad on here, is 72. I remember his Alien lid back in the 80's. Although he started riding bikes with granite wheels and Sabre-tooth Tiger skin leathers. He used to use baby Rhino feet for boots. His first lid was an empty Velociraptor egg

  16. Yep, this was my first lid at around the same time, Team Green colours. Been Arais ever since, apart from a brief stint in a Lazer Revolution that fell apart almost instantly.

  17. My first one was some full-face polycarbonate thing. Don't remember the brand, but it was mainly red, white and possibly some yellow.

Otherwise there was a bright orange Kangol shell that used to lie around the sixth form room in the late 70s. It had no padding of any description - just the shell. When you needed to go on the back of someone's bike, you put it on and held on to it with one hand to stop it spinning round.

A friend famously compared its safety properties to a clothes peg, putting a clothes peg on his head and saying "I'm protected". There wasn't much to choose between the two.

  18. Mine was a Griffon Speedstar in white. That was 1977.

  19. Nog must have tested a few helmets by now...

  20. Mine was an AGV one circa 1995, in black with jazzy graphics. Cost me £30 new and all my mates had them too when we had mopeds.
In 2010 i found one on eBay for £15 Buy-it-now, new unused, in white. Way past its useby date but i was curious. Tried it out and my god it was awful!!! Poor fit, visor didn't seal properly(3mm gap at front, gaps all round sides), open the visor and it creaked and twisted, strap felt in the wrong place, so-so-so-noisy!!! Aargh!!! Even 30mph was like a hurricane. Yet back then i loved it!
