That has occured to me ....... although I think I'll leave trying it until I next want to alter the height.
If you have the steel swinging arm then is is the same as mine in the pictures above and it is very easy to get to the bottom locknut. It seems that the alloy swinging arm has extra reinforcement in that area which makes it difficult. If you think the battery is difficult then what about the starter motor, two bolts at the back on my wifes BMW F800, dismantle half the engine on a Ducati. At least I can now change the starter brushes the unofficial way in less than an hour.
Me too but it would be nice to take a look at the commutator and maybe give it a clean to to make my already brisk cranking even brisker. I don't want to have to take the engine apart to do it though.
Have a look at the last post on my blog, the pictures say it all. It is not a way to completely remove the starter, but gives access to change or check the brushes and enough room to clean the commutator. This will renew 90% of broken starters where people/garages would throw them away and fit a new one.
