  4. Yeah that is a fair point. I came off at not much more than pushbike speed & don’t wear anything like as much protective clothing when in pedal power mode.

  5. Calculated risk, you aren’t heading up the M1 overtaking cars at 80mph, yeah you’ll get speed up down hill but generally averaging what, 20mph?

  6. I would led be interested to find out what the insurance company say when it comes paying out time.

My guess is they will argue he has contributed towards the extent of his injuries in view of his lack of protective gear.

I do agree that as long as he is not the breaking the law then what he wears is his personal choice. But equally incidents like this will only ensure that wearing more protective gear becomes a legal requirement.

It's also my view that riding without gloves, a jacket, boots and some sort of protective trousers is a pretty stupid thing to do. There is plenty of lightweight riding gear with some degree of protection suitable for summer riding so there is no excuse.

  8. You could argue getting on a bike contributed to riders injuries. It’s just as much bullshit

  9. It's like all things with an element of danger. Everything is great until something goes wrong.

You make your own choices on how you ride and what you wear.

No one could disagree though that this rider's actions in both has contributed to the seriousness of his injuries.

  10. Would you:
    A. Go skydiving without a parachute
    B. Go Diving without oxygen
    C. Weld without a mask
    D. Go Motorcycling without adequate PPE
    E. Be appropriately prepared for the task in hand

  11. 40 deg I was wearing shorts and with the Mrs wardrobe malfunctions she was wearing even less
    But
30mph max was a less than a mile - a risk but big difference between that and 80mph over taking

TBH would dream of doing that at home

  12. Hardly a comparison tho, is it.

It’s a bit like saying don’t have nice stuff and no one will steal it.

Anyone who rides in shorts and flipflops is a cockwomble. But doesn’t mean they should be made not to or disadvantaged if they did. They have to suffer the consequences.

  13. Best post so far. If guy was doing 80 (really, 80?! Straight into side of car?! And alive?!) he is moved from cockwomble to absolute twat status :upyeah:

  14. Earlier in the thread riding in shorts and t shirts was compared to the choice of smoking and drinking so tbf it’s a no less retarded comparison.
In my humble opinion I think not wearing ppe when riding is no different to not wearing safety glasses when drilling or grinding or wearing a mask when welding. Sooner or later it’s gonna end in tears

  15. But as I said before it’s down to personal choice.... I’ll stick to leathers and armour over shorts and t shirt ;)

  16. You need to stop listening to the BBC and do some research. The answer to B. is yes. Divers do not use Oxygen, they use air.

  17. Agreed but that’s not the point I was trying to make. I came off my bike at about 30ish fully kitted up & still did a lot of damage. Without that gear I’d have no skin on my left hand side, yet riding my push bike at almost that speed, I wear almost nothing. Food for thought is all I was getting at. Riding a high powered Suzuki into the side of a car is not comparable to that point.

  18. I was employed by a guy who was doing a fair speed on his push bike down hill, couldn’t stop and lost his arm after an accident

  19. I stand corrected on part B, air not oxygen ;).....
