What would the 1971 to 2009 wage look like at 1970 economics? That would be a more realistic comparison.
"normal joking" around between glasgow/edinbru or the like in a jovial manner, no prob.Have a look at the original post i was responding to. Hope you can figure it out from their. Nothing "funny" just elitist nobbery
Its funny how those who accuse others of ignorance are normally the most ignorant and closed minded of all. And everyone is entitled to an opinion, funny enough we just about have that right in most circumstances altho its far less than it was, but civility and humility costs nothing. Rudeness and ignorance to the views of others can cost everything. No one is a tosser for disagreeing with the polices of the day or even feeling a sense of hate towards someone for whatever reason. In fact to hate smeone to hat extent probaly more deserves pity and dispair than vitriol and anger. But to express delight a the death of someone else, whether Thather or a tramp sleeping on a street corner, is a tosser imo. Life is short and precious. Too much so to worry about shite like this any more.
Thought it was a good programme on Newsnight about Thatcher. I tended to agree with Shirley Williams' and Martin Amis' viewpoints. Neither liked her but both thought she had been in some way necessary. I couldn't help noticing how all her old cronies were now lords. I think my dislike of her (apart from all sorts of her policies) were that she was fearsomely bright, but knew it and talked down to everyone. She was the great patroniser. It didn't matter if you were the electorate, one of her ministers, or a foreign head of state. I assume Gorby was powerful enough and Reagan dumb enough not to mind, but she certainly pissed off most of Europe. As was pointed out, she didn't do compromise. Negotiation is all about intelligent compromise. Of course, this can also look like sticking to your guns and principles and is admirable. It's a fine line. But wisdom normally involves some compromise (cf how the Nothern Ireland situation was eventually cleared up). I don't think Thatcher was wise, whatever else she was. In game theory, the optimal courses of action depend on whether your in a repetitive game (as most are) or not. Thatcher never thought she was and cheerfully pissed on goodwill that could come in handy in the future. Respected by her foes, certainly - but then she made a lot of foes she needn't have made. Her whole style was based on confrontation. She was good at it, but it's not the best way to lead a people in my view. Her reaction to being ousted from office was typical of her. She just couldn't see that she had become completely bonkers and dictatorial. Her cabinet colleagues got bored with being made to look like fools. Her reaction was one of bitterness and disbelief and she never got over it. She had of course, been happy to dish it out herself. How short-sighted is that? The whole wet/dry thing was ridiculous. Anyone who had a modicum of care or pity or wanted some form of compromise was a wet - clearly a pejorative term. Yes she cleared out the dead wood. Her biggest failing was that she didn't plant a whole lot of new trees. Finally, she thought of Pinochet as a friend and Mandela as a terrorist. Tells you pretty much all you need to know.
Being an ex - miner & My birthday today , could'nt av wished for a better prezzi Just hope the Bitch end's up in Hell , with an ex Welsh Miner throwing shovel full's of Welsh Anthracite on the fire , to make sure she burn's proper good  ...
Not sure what you mean by 1970 economics? a buying power comparison,then-and-now,kind of thing? I'm sure the stats are out there, somewhere. If thats what you're after,I'll see if I can find something relevant
And there's me thinking you are an Air Sea Rescue helicopter pilot with a brother a gunner in an Apache.....
Well....yes. But I don't know why that makes her more special than Golda Meir or Indira Gandhi, both of whom beat her to a premiership by some years. You'd have thought it harder to be a female PM in India than the UK (though the name must have been a bit of a plus).
I'm probably one of the most right wing people you are likely to meet...............and during Thatcher's reign I was employed professionally in senior roles..........but contrary to what most people think, salaries didn't rise at a fast rate.......in fact I reckon they were fairly stagnant and the only way to improve financially was to change jobs.........even then that could be risky, depending on where you actually took an offer (Don't forget there were over 3 million unemployed; the total of which had already been cleverly reduced by removing people on various benefits) The trouble is, mortgage interest rates climbed at an extarordinary rate..as high as 16% in some cases, meaning a large amount of the population struggled and wage claims developed in every industry which brought about strikes in many industries. The mortage rate increases were cleverly kept out of the Nat Stats for cost of living and the inflation rate. MT and her crew were devisive and the financial sector grew enormously, with the government relying on it for the economy figures (successive governments simply continued the reliance........and still do, contrary to what the press say). B*gger all was spent on infrastructure while at the same time they offloaded all the nationally owned organisations. The Coal issue was a bit different....they couldn't offload it because they wanted to shut it down completely.......hitting the unions was the easiest way to avoid massive compensation claims form the miners, families and affected communities. So in all, I do get a bit waspy when people infer that because I absolutely hated the woman, that I am Left Wing. AL
Maybe you preferred a down trodden UK, poor relative of Europe with wet lettuce PM's like Heath who were constantly beaten by Unions. Maybe you liked 3 days weeks, power cuts, rubbish piled high for weeks, unburied dead. And I am embarrassed to share a land with people who rejoice at the death of a frail old lady and want to dance on her grave. Anyway wasn't Scargill a Communist
She is having a Ceremonial Funeral with Military Honours, not a Military Funeral. So effectively one down from a State Funeral. Yorkie
