Saw Iron Maiden at the Bol d'Or at Paul Ricard Circuit in 1991 - proper good weekend that was. No cost either really as it was all in the weekend race ticket price. You usually got some dire French bands but I think this was a one-off to replace a tour cancelled date.
I very nearly went to that one, had the chance to go and wimped out if I recall. Never really appreciated what a superb line up there was that weekend. No wonder my mates castigated me for not going. Missed seeing Hendrix as well at the 'Starlight' in Crawley,Sx, never forgiven myself!
...and the key word in that sentence was, now.... Is he dead? Really? Yeah, I've seen control, very good, heart and soul box set is nice too
I saw the Stones in 1981 at Roundhay Park, Leeds. Definitely one of the best gigs I've been to with good support acts too. I would always pay big money to see Springsteen. Seen him 4 times now and always good value.
I was only 14 at the time so did'nt go, although several older mates did. I was at the Bishopstock Blues festival in 2001 and the bloke in front of me had that T-shirt on.
I did not pay and would not pay to see Quo !!!!!! I sang a few times with Paul Rossi , Francis Rossies son . We where both in the royal festival choir .His Dad lives in Purley . I lived and went to school not far away. I can't see the attraction. I was living behind the football stadium in Ippo and Quo played there .. I shut all my windows !!!
Leeds in 81 was the first time I saw them, seen them a further 4 times over the years since then Wembley twice, Newcastle at between £25 and £40 general admission, and most recently in 2005, Hartford in the US, close to one of Keef's houses at around $85. Took my lad who was 12 at the time so he had seen the Stones live, and at the time thought this would be their last tour. As showmen go I havn't seen many that get the crowd going like Mick, but think 'Keef's arfritis is affecting his playing, and that's before he fell out of a tree on his head..... The "this is the last time you will see them live" ploy seems to bring in the crowds though but don't think I'd pay current prices to see them, unless it was in one of the small venues they sometimes play.
Saw 'The Quo' at the Bulldog a few years back and they were ok, entertaining and they varied the set a bit by alternating the 12 bar songs with non 12 bar numbers. 45minutes was enough though, then we moved on to the main attraction....the rave tent.
Saw Floyd at Stafford Bingley Hall in '74, £4.50, which was a lot when your paper round was £1.50 a week! Good to see a few comments about the Bonzos and Sir Viv (may he RIP). One of the first LPs I bought was Keynsham. Very funny, but also very musically accomplished.
Seems you'll be able to chuck another few notes in Gene Simmons' direction. They are coming to play Europe next year. Tickets for the Swiss gig on June 20th in Zurich (which I won't be needing) are going on sale on Nov. 30th. So you want to keep an eye out!
I was at Newcastle City Hall on 26 March 1971 when Emerson Lake and Palmer recorded their live album Pictures at an Exhibition (based on Mussorgsky). Cost me nothing to get in, as I was given the job of standing at the front just below the stage trying to stop hordes of screaming girls from getting at Greg Lake. It was quite an experience.
