1200 DVT Satnav Advice

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by Pembroke Boy, May 17, 2015.

  1. Cheers everyone for all your help and suggestions. I think I'm going to go Tomtom 40 with yoke mount.....

  2. Personal preference I suppose but I have mine bar mounted. Having used it for a while, I'm moving it to above the clocks. Approaching a roundabout with cars braking in front of you, the last place I want to be looking is down at my phone for which he exit I need.

Also it will look better with all 'instruments displays' being one above the other. Otherwise it's a bit like having your car rev counter in the usual position but your speedo on the bottom of the steering wheel. Your constantly moving your head.

  3. I did a lot of looking into this too and went with garmin Zumo 590. Has a wealth of features above the Tom Tom. Means I can control my music and phone in one point. No stopping to answer calls or skip tracks as well as informing me where to go. Unit is simple to use and understand.
Currently it's mounted using the supplied kit but I struggled to get it square on and so I will switch to navihalter wen I get bk from my trip, it's usable where it is but not user friendly.

  4. Moved mine this morning. No navihalter but attached an iPhone mount to the screen bit. Aztec spacers give plenty of clearance for an iPhone 6 plus. Could probably get an iPad behind the screen but that would be silly... Wouldn't it? [IMG]

  5. Two more pics showing mount and USB leads. Must change that to a black lead though.

  6. I use Amazon basics lightning cables as they never break. You are spot on with the inability to use a charger but I just drilled a hole in the bottom

  7. first pic, is that wrapped around the arm all the way? Looks like the same holder I have but not found a way of fitting so high. Any more detail useful, esp as my satnav gave up the ghost yesterday!!

  8. No, not wrapped all the way but enough to get a cable tie through the two holes (having taken out the bolt) and pull it damn tight. When I get more time I'll drill the bit I've clamped it onto, then bolt it. Was out on it today though and it held up great. Even in all that rain/monster hail.

I have just ordered a better 12v to USB converter though as this current one chargers fine, unless I really tax the iPhone with satnav, music and Bluetooth... At which point it will just about hold whatever charge it has or very slowly dissipate. Just satnav and it still charges fine.

  9. assume you cannot adjust the screen with it fitted?

we love a bit of cable ties btw ;)

  10. btw do yourself a favour and get an ultimate add ons power supply, as once you have the master lead the ends are interchangeable. I have I6, I4 and mini usb ones for satnav.

  11. It's a 2010 so the screen is adjusts using the 2 x thumb screws rather than the squeeze mechanism on the newer. I have Aztecs and winglets fit now so happy and don't touch the screen height but could if I wanted to.

  12. Well I messed about for a hour or so, but couldnt get it so I could still see the speedo, so back to ram mount on the headstock

  13. Mine sits perfect and took a few minutes just using my temp bodge cable tie. Maybe you have a different mount/case. I got mine from eBay, some guy paid full ££ for it but had an iPhone 6, not a 6 plus so I helped him out by taking it cheap.

I'll do my proper magyver this weekend and get it bolted to that plastic bit. If you want another crack and need to request some pics, let me know what you need and I can do my best.

  14. Pic crom the front may be useful. Although I have a my14 so its adjustable on the move

  15. So really you need a navihalter or make your own from a metal plate you can screw where the screen screws to the mount. Will take some more pics tomorrow

  16. That's where I mounted my Garmin, I did have a navihalter and couldn't fault it or the position apart from it was to close to my tired old eyes to properly focus on it so moved it to the yoke. Worth mentioning if you eyes are like mine.

  17. JH, what case and mount is that??
Been looking for something like that to put on mine.
Also found an alternative to a navihalter which may be of interest

  18. image.jpg image.jpg I have a homemade mount for my 2013 bike, mounts the nav above the clocks on a ram ball. 11k on my bike and never missed a beat. As I am trading up to the DVT this unit is available for sale, £35 posted if anyone wants it.

  19. That navihalter alternative looks spot on. Mine is just a cheapo £10 iPhone waterproof case that I put a hole in for a charger. It click locks to a handlebar mount that a have wrapped around the plastic top of the screen carriage, rather than a handlebar. Was a quick 10min job but cost me no more than the case itself. No fancy mounts needed if you don't mind screwing straight into the plastic screen carriage but once it's mounted you'll never see the screws.
