Seized 748.

  1. It is magnetic.

    Flywheel side cover is off, cant see anything amiss behind it.

    Just striping off the wiring loom and taking the exhaust system off so I can get to where I need to be.

  3. Your going to have to find out if its top end or bottom . If its bottom you'd be better off with something like this .DUCATI 748S ENGINE BOTTOM HALF | eBay.

    I would look for a full engine if I were you it will be cheaper in the long run . As that piece is metallic it could even be a gearbox failure .
     
  4. Cheers for the link, I've got my eye on that and desperately need to figure out which bit has gone bang before the listing ends!

    I'm assuming of course 748bip tops will fit on a 748s bottom.
     
  5. Cranker V2 might still have a complete 748 sp engine for sale , have a look in the for sale section I think its title is 748 ,
    916 bits for sale.

  6. Hopefully know soon enough, thought the blanking plug was quite a bright silvery metal, the stuff that plopped out the bottom seems almost golden. May well just be discoloration due to heat, will see when I can open the thing up.

  8. Make sure the swingarm pivot is free to come out before you go for the final drop. They can be bastards if they've siezed in the bearings. Don't forget also the back end will collapse when you pull the swingarm pivot :wink:
    If you're doing the job on your own, i'd suggest getting as much of the motor stripped off while it's still in the frame. Heads, cylinders (you can inspect the crank with them off), clutch housing, primarys....all much easier in the bike and makes the bottom end much lighter to handle.
    The only issue I see you hitting is the priamry gear on the end of the crank. You'll need a puller and a hefty one at that. You can still split the cases, you just can't get the crank out of the RHS case.

  9. Which genius designed the swingarm bolt/pin affair!

    Cheers nelly, Going to let the penetrating fluid do its job and start taking the engine apart in situe now I've got the loom out of the way.

  11. swing arm bolt is rediculase to get out still not got mine out on my 916 need too rebuild engine too i spent half a day at it till the missuses said that was enough banging keep the pics coming intrested in seeing whats wrong not sure what delights i will find when i get mine out of the bike good luck
     
  12. Have another swingarm "pin" from another swingarm so got a decent sized drift to hammer the other one out once the fluid had done its job.

    Dont need to mark up the belts do I? the engine isnt timed/cant be timed might aswell just whip them off and when rebuilding just go through the full timing routine.

    All that looks ok whatever it is, took the cover off what I assume is the oil pump and everything is fine in there, no blockages or bits broken.

    Had a quick look at whatever valves I could, seem pretty straight and undamaged, might be adifferent story with the other 4 I cant see but will come to that later.

  13. The swingarm seizes in the bearings in the swingarm...try and flood the area with penetrant, behind the frame boss and between the engine cases and swingarm.
    If it's stuck, it's about the worst chuffin job you can get :mad:

  14. Haha, yea am drip feeding it penetrating fluid as I type but also pondering exactly what shape Italian spanners are because for the life of me I cant get British ones onto 4 of the cylinder head nuts!

  16. Out of warranty you say... might see if I can wrangle something if mine has the same. Only 20k miles on it.

    Local Ducati dealership is breaking a 996 I think. Hopefully transfer a few parts if needed.

    Am done for today, will take the other cylinder head off tomorrow and hopefully the penetrating fluid will have worked its magic on the swing arm pivot jobber.
     
  18. Can you pull the primary gear off . That will disconnect the engine from the gear box . If you can turn the engine then you will know its the gear end or vice versa .

  19. Cheers, I had no idea what it was, will give it a go in the morning.

    So the big one is attached to the gearbox gubbins behind? Is it a simple jiggle and slide off sort of thing or will it require a puller?
     
  20. It did lock the rear wheel, and I honestly don't know how I didn't end up on my ass sliding down the road!

    But then the gearbox goes up and down the gears, and the spindle thingy spins when its put in neutral.
