916 Should Have Bought A Honda

Discussion in '748 / 916 / 996 / 998' started by Kevin Tallant, Sep 15, 2022.

  1. Take a deep breath, it is a Ducati forum. Expect some flak for and some fun poking for other makes.

  2. Let's hope that the only pain your gonna get with 916 ownership, they're worth the effort long term.

  4. On the plus side it was easier to ride through East London school run than Superlight, the gearbox on sps is a dream compared to the bag of bolts I'm use to & the sound from the full system is obscene! :—) . It did feel strange around 5k rpm, engine picked up rpm but not much drive... Then pulling again? Hopefully this is all linked to electrical gremlins.
No doubt I'll receive fine from transport for London as didn't make 15.30 mot appointment, so technically still on Sorn (betting ANPR picked me up somewhere)

  5. i get a semi each time i see any of my bikes... i dont get that with my mower (its a honda)

  6. I had a 1000 blade. It would often run out of charge on a run. Reg/Rev then stator went.

All that glitters is not gold…

  7. Most likely you have a stock eprom. It had a flat spot at 5K rpm for emissions testing.
For the price, getting an aftermarket one is good value. I bought an old Ultimap eprom on ebay and it really smoothed everything out.

Or even better, get a dyno tune and matching chip.

  8. I don’t have anything against Honda but I’m pretty sure that picture says more about the rider than the bike.

  9. Completely agree! Many bike generalisations say far more about the rider than the manufacturer.

  10. We had to change chip to get bike to run at all, it's got a genuine 073 916sps chip in. Maybe a trip to the rolling road after electrical gremlins sorted.

  11. I'll need educating here... so is that an engine mapping sorta type thingy chip? And they or their connections fail?

  12. We put new tps sensor and set up numerous times but bike wouldn't rev. Last ditch before sending cpu off was to change main chip, which seemed to have cured it. Wondering if lack of charge was hindering higher rpm, seemed OK in East London traffic around 5k/6K rpm, but once out on motorway it struggled.

  13. And of course at higher rpm the electrical load would increase from at least the fuel pump and that in would highlight any issue with the battery and/or reg/rec.

I ended up fitting a simple voltmeter that gives a coloured led indication of the charging system and any impending issues. I'd put a link up to it on here if I could find it...
