Showa rear shock bush/mounts

Discussion in 'Supersport (1974-2007)' started by Stew, Sep 21, 2013.

  1. right had a dig around and found the old bearings in the bag the new ones arrived in
ok so we have a part number on the bag
bearing manufacturer is iko and the part number is sb12 a
just to clarify my shock is for a 1999 750 ss
wether the bearings had been replaced before I do not know so as far as I am aware they are the right ones
if there not well tough there fitted now

  2. So, as your bike is an IE SS, John................Do you know which shock is fitted? Is it a Showa; Sachs Boge or summat else?

Sachs Boge will have a knob on top of the reservoir (no, not the rider....) and a Showa has a slotted head adjuster on the side of the reservoir at the top.

  3. Right - I think that a previous owner has fitted the 'wrong' bushes at some point in the past. I've found that the bushes are indeed a rubber sleeve sandwiched between two metal sleeves, but looking at the shock mount itself, you can see the grooves for the wire retainers that would be used to hold the SB12A bearing. My original idea was to replace the spring and clean up the shock. But now do I, A) Buy two SB12A bearings and go on the hunt for top hats and wire retainers (o-rings not a problem) or B) Say 'to hell with it' and buy a newer Boge shock? I would rather 'A' I think . . .

The photo below shows the shock, one complete bush and one dismantled bush . . .

  4. I reckon you are right.........

......bearings replaced with rubber bushes because some silly git couldn't find the right ones, unless of Ducati fitted them to the very early shocks.......

I honestly can't recall which bearing reference was for which shock.........I need to read all the threads again.........

Note: The Sachs shock doesn't have the retaining circlips (not in the carbed SS shock anyway).....

However, I am now wondering which Sachs shock it is that I have........is the IE one or the Carbed one??..........I think it is the latter.

Luckily I have the Showa fitted so I can take mine apart and check the stroke length.

  5. its a showa rear shock al should have said naughty me

might have a spare set of top hats stew will have to look definetley have 2 will see if still have all 4

  6. I think I'm going to try and gather bits and go to a bearing place tomorrow and explain the situation. Would there be any chance that Al, Gaz or anyone else that has easy access to them, could provide me with the dimensions or a drawing of the top hat bushes please? From Gaz's drawing I've got the M10 x 20 od dimensions, I'm guessing they're 10.9 mm long but info on the steps etc. would b greatly helpful/appreciated.

    Cheers

  7. You're some man for one man Johnboy! Cheers

  8. that's what the other voices in my head say lol
pm me your address I will send you the top hats that I can find
if I can only find 2 lying around at least you will have templates to have some made up

  9. pm received bud give me a few days and they should be with you :upyeah:

  10. I can't access my SHowa ones, because I'm not taking my shock off just for the hell of it, and the Sachs top hat bushes are a different size to the Showas........the Showa ones are smaller O/D...........but if you check with Gaz and his drawing on the right side page, I think you will find his dimensions allow you to calculate what you need.........

  11. What you want these dimensions - It will cost you.

May be measure the bearing I.D. and machine to suit to get a good fit. As you can see I measured 3 different O.D's

    Cheers Gaz

  12. Cheers guys, absolutely fantastic.

    Greatly appreciated.

  13. As far as I can reall, the 'flange' of the top hat bushes for the Showa are 20mm diameter.

The 'spigot' part of the bush should be the same diameter as the hole through the bearing, with a 10mm hole right through the bush.

I'll see what I can measure on my Showa later today......

  14. Cheers Al, on't put yourself out. I think with the details up to now and johnboys top hats, I'm good to go.

    Thanks

    4 top hat bushes
    4 o rings
    2 circlips
and for good measure one old bearing for comparison

so I think all you need is
    2 bearings
    2 circlips

should be able to get them in the post tomorrow bud :upyeah:

  16. I reckon he will need:

4 top hat bushes; 4 circlips; 4 O rings; 2 bearings; and a packet of gravel.....

  17. Just checking the detail - do you mean a circlip or a round wire spring clip thingy as shown in one of the picture in following link.

900ss (Showa GD022) rear shock stuff

    Cheers Gaz

  18. ahh that would be a round wire spring clip thingy

  19. Johnboy - cannot express enough thanks for this! Cheers.

Also, I'm going to throw something else into the mix; Do any of you guys operate a Hyperpro type progreesive spring? If so, would you recommend them?? Planning one as the current spring is a bit tatty and I've heard they make quite a difference??

  20. No sorry, I have never ridden mine so don't even know what the standard spring is like - but one day I will.

    Cheers Gaz
