Slipper clutch or sacrilege?

  1. Well I've managed that one on my DD bike, full factory corse 4 post slipper courtesy of GSE shoe horned into my little 620, bit overkill but you did notice it into the chicane at Caldwell.
     
  2. Exactly what I just faced - needed a new clutch anyway so used it as an excuse to fit a slipper clutch, and decided to get a decent one whilst I'm at it (42 tooth Sigma). Most of my (pathetically low) mileage is done on track days, and I've read enough "no brainer for the track" opinions to persuade me to make the investment. First try-out will be at Jerez next month.


    Interesting diversity of views over the open cover option: Neil at Sigma advised against it due to risk of getting crap in it from an off, but my Duc dealer advised to have some sort of gap to help disperse dust, even if it's just leaving out the gasket/spacer on the existingh cover. I'm thininig that if I have an off, a bit of grass in my clutch will be last on a long list of problems, so I went with an open cover :smile:. Not a huge fan of cosmetic upgrades like open covers or carbon that's purely for looks, so I'm now feeling like a right old tart!
     
  3. Different schools of thought on the cover debate. My experience I dropped a bike with the standard cover and it bent on impact with the floor and managed to catch the pressure plate, ripped a couple of posts and springs off, new clutch hub and pressure plate required.

    JHP open billet cover I've had and also seen one go down the road, clutch survived intact although the cover was a bit mangled but didn't bend.
     
  4. I have experience with righting off clutches. I did use a open half carbon DP vitems=, until a 100mph get off at oulton. The cover was ripped off exposing the posts and snapping 4 of them, plates bent, baskes edges bent - totally U/S. So to aidc ventilation and afford some protection I went for a standard clutch cover but with a milled out crankcase corse stylee. This allows dust out but protects (somewhat) in the event of an earth sky earth event. I ouldn't want to use a slipper with out some form of ventilation, keeping it clean keeps it operational.
     
  5. Interesting that the slipper clutch on the D16 has a completely closed clutch cover.
     
  6. My mechanic suggested an open clutch cover if it goes to the track to keep it cooler, which will stop it destroying itself over time. Surely the perfect solution would be a 3/4 R&G race cover, open at the back, with a smaller opening at the front. This would encourage air flow through the clutch and should protect it from a lateral impact during a crash. Just an idea thou. Thinking about it, i may just contact R&G and propose the idea :upyeah:
