Stuck a reflector on my plate: anyone know why they (reflectors, not plates) are still deemed necessary in the UK?
Still deemed a legal requirement (Vehicle Construction and Use Regulations 1999) for all UK vehicles. Andy
If you have ever approached a bike or car without them on a dark country Lane at night you will know why.
Started packing the bikes away… weather changes mean some won’t be ridden again till March/April again. Quick wipe over and indoor covers on ready for the long slumber
That’s a good question. I live in a rural area and we have no footpaths near us so we have to part walk our dogs on the road, in winter it’s obviously dark but we all wear clip on lights (including the dogs). I see lots of runners wearing reflectors.
I don't think anyone does to be fair. With daytime running lights, they've become pretty much irrelevant, I just add a stick on at MOT time if I have a three year old plus bike.
Apparently, the rear one is a requirement, side/fork ones not (in UK). The 'problem' is that most of us fit a tail tidy when we get a new bike...and they often (mostly?) don't have reflectors whereas the originals do. I fitted one because I want to minimise my non-compliance with the regs and the risk of a telling off from old bill...as I've got a 7 x 5.5 plate.
Yet another daft outdated law. The bike has got a bloody bright LED rear light. If you can’t see that in the dark, there’s no way you’ll see a little number plate reflector.
When I lived in Denmark in 1981, all children had to wear reflectors. They all had them hanging off their coat hoods.
Schoolkids had reflective armbands in the 60s when the clocks were a bit weird and we went to school in the dark.
Perhaps its for the odd occasion that bikes are left on the road, parked, with no lights on, especially on an unlit road. Just helps other road users see it, in addition to the reflective numberplate. Reflectors on the fork legs help when the bike is parked with the front end pointing out into the road. Probably the same reason skips left in the road should be lit at night, with reflective cones etc.
