  5. Pronouncing Nguyen is the hard bit (it's the equivalent of Smith) luckily you can have a lot of practice because all the Cannabis farmers in the UK are called Nguyen.

  6. Fixed the dishwasher. it’s been leaking for ages and I’ve already changed a couple of parts but today I noticed it was coming from the pump body and 10p worth of new O ring fixed it ( I seem to be having a run on O ring problems at the minute!). I was close to ordering a new dishwasher as well. God my life is so interesting :joy:

  7. Eaten more slop. Was being sensible and ordering wine by the glass, but trying to get a top up was a rare occasion, so that plan is out of the window for the rest of the trip.

  10. Interesting!

Whilst living in Mex, I came to know very well a group of Marine Corps who were in the legendary hell of Khe San.

I also went to Vietnam back in the late 1980's, when there really wasn't much tourism at all. I remember walking across the runway into the airport, looking at Mig jets (rather dilapidated) and army border guards with mean snarling dogs on chains. Flying out of there a few days later to Phu Bai, the 'plane was overloaded with people travelling without seats crammed into the aisle. It was an old Russian bus, with droopy wings and when the A/C came on it looked like smoke coming out of the ceiling. As the engines screamed to gain height, it banked quite hard and the back of my seat collapsed leaving me rolling into those standing like a bowling ball. Those were the days!

I just ordered the book, always good to try a recommendation -thanks.

  11. Finally my first -and nearly last- big splash happened on Carsington Water today.

Sorted the rigging out in half assed way as it seems I'm missing some parts. Tricky thing with boats, the owners take stuff off, rearrange it or maybe just lose or break it (sound familiar?). Anything with boat stamped on it must be made in secret by Ducati as the prices are incredibly similar. The problem is compounded by the lack of any chandlery at the lake, so I have resolved to just go out and sail in an arguably Heath Robinson style, to work out what's needed and take it on the next trip.

Anyhow, the little cat slid neatly onto the lake, it was a bit fraught launching, returning the trolley to shore and sailing off virtually simultaneously & all single handed, but I imagine (hope) I'll get better at it.

Perched on the tramp I grab at the various multi-coloured bits of string, and pull them with varied effects, but at least the boat is moving along; I dodge a couple of people in a Laser and think all is well in my world. My mind wanders back to big boat sailing; I smile and recall what I would have been doing were I back aboard my old 47' footer... Probably much the same as now except that I'd definitely have looked over the side to make sure the cooling water was coming out of the exhaust...

ARGH! Thinking of water coming out makes me realise the impending disaster about to overtake me. Damn! I round the boat into the wind, let all the ropes off their cleats and leap off the back into the lake -surprisingly warm which was a real plus. No prizes for guessing who hadn't screwed the bungs securely into the hulls...

It all turned out OK. The boat hulls were probably only half full, so I once I had screwed the bungs in, I hauled myself back aboard & sailed back to the beach, removed the bungs once again and let the water drain out for five minutes. Lots of laughing with my new found sailing buddies and I guess I made a notable entrance!

I have to add the fabulous Carsington SC safety patrol arrived on station immediately as the noobie on the Hobie jumped into the water. So there was a powerful rib there to help and assist if needed and all without being summoned. Good to know they are keeping watch!

I did make a point of apologising to all the staff and bought a few sherberts. Happily the cutie on the front desk thought "it was good practise for the safety guys LOL" and no harm done.

  13. Thanks for the book recommendation, I’ll order it. I really enjoyed ’Chickenhawk’ although it was quite a few years ago that I read it. It was an interesting viewpoint of the war.

As with all wars, you can’t help but feel; was it necessary?

  18. You know it.....it was worth it though....it wasnt an expensive upgrade - far from it and the old cd player has never ever been used...it used to be our second car but since diesels are now effectively banned (Smax 2 Ltr so we may as well be driving round in the devils chariot) its now the car we use all the time - normally ive never gone for sat nav head units as the sat nav invariably goes out of date...the times ive been in a car and the person says - yeah the sat nav doesnt work as theres no upgrades for it....but, this one is effectvely an android tablet so google maps is updated on the fly and my co pilot app from my phone works perfectly on there...this represents the last of the "upgrades!" whats really cool is when the car is on the driveway it finds the house wireless network so i can run updates, pull music from the house server just like my phone...brilliant.

  20. Did the D43 first thing today. Bloody sketchy, quite narrow in places, but no traffic, so was fine. Then rode the D996 over to Millau, which was a cracking road. Had to do a 20km ride from Millau to get on the bloody thing, but the roads there was quite fun.

Then, rode the D911, I’ve never seen so many speed cameras over here, ironically. I think I got caught by one, so will look forward to the fine in the post.

Arrived at the hotel at about half 3 as I had a load of work emails to deal with (check in is 3), only to be told the room wouldn’t be ready for an hour. Looking at the size of it, it must take them half a day to clean it.

Was worth waiting for. I’m in the honeymoon suite, complete with my own sauna, jacuzzi and sex swing.
