  6. "Volunteered" for the safety boat at the lake yesterday morning.

The friendly girl on the front desk explained that all members must volunteer for four duties of four hours as part of the sailing club rules. If you don't preselect them yourself on the portal, they allocate these sessions arbitrarily and you are then obliged to do them or swap with someone else. The last option is to pay an additional £160 which covers your obligations at £10 per hour. I had no idea about any of this; I had simply researched the nearby lakes and choose the sailing club at the largest one. It just so happened that there was a safety boat slot that needed to be filled...

I'd eaten well expecting to go sailing, so I grabbed a bottle of water and went to the pontoon. The safety boat duties are done in pairs & fortunately the other guy was a pretty good bloke (who had bikes) so that was a huge plus. We refueled the boat, checked the lines & safety gear then climbed aboard a 14ft rib with a 60hp bolted to the back. We cast off and headed out on patrol, basically watching for anyone who isn't sailing along and buzzing up to check on them. After about twenty minutes the skies cracked open, dropping a full on squall which came through gusting 18K/ 20K gusts for an hour. The rest of the time it only poured down.

Happily we didn't need to rescue anyone. We got very cold and wet. And so it goes.

  7. Just got back from an early morning ride out to avoid the rain this afternoon. I try to avoid riding at weekends but was surprised by the empty roads.

  9. I spent Friday and Saturday at the Triumph Adventure experience in Wales.
Easily one of my top ten weekends of the decade.

  11. Just got back from a weekend in West Wales. Campsite was 'badged' Adventure Bike Weekend, but with a handful of other campers, no ale sold on-site and planned entertainment for the Saturday of a singing duo, we got a taxi to town, had a curry and got p1ssed as farts.

    Weather was great too.

Covered 600 miles on cracking roads, so perfect for the running in service.

Was out with the DOCGB North & West Yorkshire branches today......the route took in Northallerton, Thirsk, Helmsley, the NY500 cafe in Pickering to look at the cars/bikes/motoring memorabilia, then Whitby for fish and chips followed by an icecream in Saltburn. 14. Just got home from a long weekend trip to Belgium/Holland following the Operation Market Garden route with an old army mate. Dodged all the rain showers & had a fantastic break. Recommend it to anyone interested in military history.

  15. Keep hoping I’ll actually take a holiday 1 year and try and do the whole Dunkirk/Normandy/Holland in some kind of chronological order. However I’d also like to see some of Ypres as my Grandad was wounded there in 1917 enough that he was sent home to England but not so much that he couldn’t carry on his life without too much impediment.

  17. Well yes, but would you really, really let either of those 'outfits' touch, let alone work on any of your vehicles......:scream:
I know the answer from my perspective, and it isn't "yes"!
