No, I wouldn't want to belong to a club that would have me as a member. I did have an insight. The first, reflex, thought was she's too old. The second, considered, thought was she's probably my age (possibly even younger!) And I suddenly knew why old men go for young women. I always preferred older women - until they looked like someone's gran. Now I see being continually reminded you look like someone's gramps. I stress that this isn't universal - but I see women as getting on with the practicalities of life; and men doing all kinds of daring things and innovating and it's a distraction, or flailing about not sure what they should be doing - but anyway afraid of life; of living. Feeling instinctively inferior to women and afraid of growing old because youth is our purpose. Well all I can say is thank fuck for powerful motorbikes! So, that's what I've done today!
OK I'm confused now. Is it the women or the men "who are anyway afraid of life; of living"? Also is it not women who are doing the most to pretend they're young? I don't know many men who instinctively feel inferior to women either.
Following my recent purchase of a kayak, my foray into paddling has been stalled by fettling a new to me/ old car and the acute shortage of sunshine -vital for warming the water. However the car is nearly where I want it and time is flying by so I went and did an hours pool training this morning. The guy gave me a kayak, a short explanation of the best way to exit an upturned kayak and wandered off. Pleased to say getting out is far easier than I imagined or was led to believe though it will be different perhaps in a cold river or lake. I repeated this a few times and then did it whilst wearing a spray deck. I then spent my energy teaching myself to get back into the damned thing whilst swimming -which is quite tricky. I learnt several things: Its all easier once you are actually there doing it. I should have anticipated that the instruction would be minimal as the total cost was low -especially as they provided a warm pool, kayaks, spray deck etc. Anyhow its almost midsummer so no time like the present to press on. I booked an hour of one on one instruction, in a 15 degree lake to learn the fabled eskimo roll on Tuesday. It costs more and its colder but I'm confident I will learn far more. I would have done it tomorrow but I first need to go to Manchester and buy suitable neoprene head gear to reduce "the cold shock". I'll let you know how it goes, though I'm already cold just thinking about it. LOL!
Sounds impressive Jez, the thought of doing an Eskimo roll in open water is terrifying. Good luck with it all. Out of interest where do you buy waterproof clothing from in town (Manchester) The reason I ask is I’ve set myself up for body boarding with family in Iceland and I know from experience the Atlantic can be very unforgiving
Men. Why men are known for getting things like powerful motorbikes, fast cars, in middle age. And younger women. Exceptions are men who always had powerful motorbikes and fast cars - 'boys toys' - and those with a wife growing old together (because when you're with someone every day they always look who they are and you're with them because of who they are. And aging yourself is okay with the support of a soulmate and/or surrounded by family which reminds you what really matters (and it is all about successfully raising children)). Women tend to be concerned about their looks because they've been taught to be in the world that developed from the threat of horrific male violence. The definition of a woman of wisdom is one who doesn't care what others think of her appearance, except tactically, understanding the game and playing it to the advantage of something more important than peer pressure. The number of people who think beyond the first, convenient, conclusion, or that know themselves as opposed to self-deceive, is a rounding error. Approximately the same number aware that their whole consciousness is dictated by biochemicals. What the average person self reports is scientifically meaningless, what they tell themselves to justify what they do. Men are inferior to women because the women give birth and for the most part care more about others as opposed to their own ego.
Well I've always had lots of toys so maybe I'm not the one who will understand your theory too well. I think your penultimate point (biochemicals) explains -at least in part- the attraction to younger women. Although let's face it, younger women are damn fine creatures to spend your time with. If I speak to any of these inferior men I'll be sure to ask them about it. But IIRC I've never met one, any more than I have inferior or superior women -nor any variety in between them both.

I'm not terrified, but I am scared of being upside down, offshore and not being able roll back up. I think I'd be able to get out of the kayak, but getting back in it is tricky! So I will force myself to learn this now which will set me in good stead. Plus I'm bound to gain more confidence and all kinds of other tips from an instructor. The best place to get gear imo is online. Prices are better, and the variation of course infinite. Water gear is far less style oriented than other activity clothing -like bikes, ski, boarding & cycling- so there's no issue with buying expensive stuff as you will feel good wearing it for many seasons. As you would expect all topline gear is good and similar quality level but the retail prices vary from seller to seller -sometimes quite dramatically. I have an O'Neil wetsuit 4.3mm for the bleeping cold, cold water. Wetsuits with chest fastening are much easier to put on and take off then those that zip up at the back. Its because getting the fit snug puts pressure on the zips and they snag. So often you buy a back fastening suit where the zip doesn't snag (so you can get it on) only to find that it doesn't keep you very warm as its not forced to mold onto your body (too loose). Front / chest fastening means you can use both hands easily to pull the suit as you raise the zip thus better fit. But they do cost more. Fully taped seams is a real must have feature, otherwise the cold water comes in where its stitched.
